apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look!: The Japanese Love Elizabeth

9-7-sparkle.jpg

You may remember Elizabeth Ingrid Hauser's stunning pink and green apartment, which we then had the pleasure of recommending to the New York editors of Anan Magazine (apparently a very large mag in Japan). They were so taken with her that they set up a full scale shoot and are currently spreading her decor all over Tokyo and beyond...

Those who would like this kind of attention take note: our Fall Colors Contest starts next month and the media will be watching. (Thanks, Elizabeth)

I love that corner shelf with the boxes on it. Where can I find one of those?

So cute!

Sylvia -- try Ballard Designs. I think they had some corner cabinets in their last catalog.

I don't think I've ever seen that ubiquitous IKEA cafe table and chairs look so un-IKEA before. I think I might "I spy" some other IKEA furnishings hiding in those pics as well.

Good job.

Sylvia- the corner shelf is from Ikea. I have one that I'm getting rid of to make way for new stuff. Let me know if you want it.

The place looks better than it ever has! I like the streamlined decor much better.

Eileen,
how much are you selling it for?

The Japanese have this weird obsession with Victorian design and, in general, western romantic icons -- ruffles, pants that come up over the belly button, roses, ornate tables and curtains, and anything that seems to come vaguely from a fantasy realm, though unicorns have not caught on there, it seems. Very interesting...

I think L.P. hit the nail on the head. Its not so much just the Victoriana, as much as the prominant role that "cuteness" or kawaii plays in Japanese culture. Think Hello Kitty and Pikachu. Even Japanese police forces have their own individual "cute" cartoon mascots.

Thank you so much for all of your compliments. And Eileen, I'm so happy that you have an IKEA corner shelf for Sylvia. Lots of sharing going on here! As noted, there is quite a bit of IKEA and probably even more West Elm. I'm totally cuckoo for their pretty boxes, where I can neatly conceal all of my packratty treasures! Just in case you're curious, I design girls' toys, write sparkly craft books and invent for a living so I find it inspiring to be springtime year round!

P.S. I love your translation L.P.!

love the cutout girl over the mantle - where did you find her?

I just want to be an object in that apartment so I never have to leave and I can feel all pink and wonderful Always!

I don't know how people really achieve such complete visions, but I Am Inspired!

Killorn,

The pink cutout girl actually came from the store Limited Too. She was part of their Valentine's Day of '99 window display. What you can't see in the picture is that her other eye is green (she's winking)...so she matches my apartment perfectly! I saw her, fell in total L-O-V-E and asked the employees if I could keep her after the display came down. I know how busy people get so I only harbored a smidgen of hope that they would call but about two weeks later they did! And she's been mine ever since!
