Outdoor Home: Adrienne's Mini Oasis

Name: Adrienne R.
Location: East Village, NYC

Even if you have just a slim ribbon of outdoor space (Hey, but that can be a lot in NYC!), look what a little growing plantlife and a good decorative eye can do. (Thanks, Adrienne!)

I love the cascading effect you've created here. Good job going with astroturf.

is it plywood under the turf? I would love to smooth out my own fire escape so I could put a little chair on it, but I don't want to get in trouble... what do you recommend?

I used a firm astroturf that's been out there for two years. No wood. I'm on the back of the building, no trouble so far.

videonerdann, if you live in NYC (and in many other places), it is illegal to put so much as a little yellow sticky note on your fire escape, and for good reason.

This is charming. It is heartening just to look at the photograph. Thanks.

Oh, dear, MrGreen might be right. Although we all know that a fire-inspired adrenalin rush would send the petunias flying in a heartbeat..... Speaking of fire, I'll bet that the balcony looks even more beautiful, if possible, by the candlelight from the candles in those lovely hanging mesh baskets. Where did you get them, if I may ask?

The setting of the old brick building doesn't hurt the whole thing a bit.

This is really lovely, beautifully decorated and gardened, but is it a fire escape? If it is, and if there were a fire, I think you'd really want the fire escape to be functioning as a fire escape and not a patio.

Aulaire, the owner of the building might not be so amused when he's fined for having obstructed fire escapes.
