Threads. If you are looking for fabric and don't want to pay and arm and a leg, there are a few places in town that stock large amounts of fabrics at warehouse prices.
Harry Zarin has the largest selection we know of everything from velvets, to silks, to cottons, to polyesters for if you want to make curtains, cover a headboard, pillow cases, you name it. You have to pick through a lot of rolls to find what you want, but it is more fun that way.
If you don't want to do everything yourself, Zarin offers upholstering and tailoring service, so you can choose your fabric and they will pick up your couch and recover it or make curtains for you.
Zarin's warehouse is upstairs, while downstairs they offer higher service with new fabric books, trimming, pillow inserts, foam, window treatments, curtain rods, etc.
NYMag says they buy"direct from the mills and elsewhere to offer steep discounts on luxurious designer fabrics."
Citysearch gives them an 8.5 rating! Whoopee, that's informative.

I love Harry Zarin and you are right in that their prices and colleections are hard to beat. However, if raking in a huge, basement-like room makes you nuts - try B&J Fabrics. Beautiful selection, excellent prices, in a perfectly lit showroom - with VERY HELPFUL staff. It's a totally diferent vibe. Last time I was there Serena Willams was searching for the perfect fabric. Prices are excellent as is selection.
I was recently in Zarin because I saw thier new ad in NY Magazine. I was there a few years ago and what a change. They put in all new racks organized by color and fabric so I found what i needed fast. There was a great sales person, Judy, who was amazing and knew everything. They obviously spent alot of money fixing up the 3 floors. They also have a website now so I can shop online. But hey...free parking for downtown is worth the trip ( I found that infor on website before I went). All the other places I used to shop have gone out of business.
Great selection and service. Easy to buy online.
It has everything you can think of and then some.I met the owner, Bobby Zarin who was friendly and very helpful. That's the reason they have the great reputation they enjoy. They do things the old fashion way, you, the customer come's first.
Don't order samples from Harry Zarin's website! I ordered 13 samples of fabrics that I found on their website. Obviously, I needed the samples so I could see the ACTUAL fabric colors, patterns, etc. I was happy to pay the requisite $.99 per sample but was then charged a whopping $10.85 for shipping this 6" x 7" envelope with the little swatches inside. The worst part of the whole thing, however, was that there was NO identifying informaton attached to or written on the back of ANY of the samples. So this whole effort (total cost $21.77) was meaningless and a complete waste of time. Since it is impossible to identify one from the other on the computer monitor the only recourse is to send clippings of the most desireable samples BACK to Zarin and AWAIT a return of same to me (for who knows how much in shipping fees!) with identifying info including price per yard and THEN finally order the yardage I'd need. This has been very frustrating and a total waste of time! Glad to the reviewer above who suggested B & J. I'll try them now!
I saw an ad in NY Mag and went downtown. Zarin has everything. I didn't know they carry furniture but I guess they just started. The prices were awesome and quality same as D and D building. Unbelievable prices. The sales staff was very helpful. I worked with Sabrina, who I recognized from the Cosby Show. I guess she became and Interior Designer. Great taste and very organized. I bought draperies and a couch and they installed them beautifully. I will only shop there now. They told me they are expanding next door so I guess they will be around another 60 years.

I also ordered samples from Zarin. I didn't mind the price for shipping because I know what a pain it is to cut and send sample. I am in a similar business and lose money doing it. I can only imagine how many swatches they cut and probably very few turn into orders. In any case...when the swatches were not marked properly..they couldn't have been nicer. They even scanned in the swatches and emailed me the information. I saved over $800 so it was worth the trouble. David, the man I spoke to, said they have improved thier sampling process and even credited me the money for the swatches against my order. I didn't expect that when I am saving so much money off the listed price everywhere else. I would DEFINITELY order again. Just compare thier prices to anyone else..you will see too. Good Luck!
u should alsotry m and a decorators at 294 grand street, exellent service and great fabrics at discounted price, they do it all from a tz

I absolutely love this place. I have never seen such gorgeous fabric anywhere. There was a young new desinger there with great taste, her name is Elaine. I would highly recommend checking out Zarin!
Zarn is great. I am in the middle of redecorating my room and Zarin is doing everything. I custom orderd apink tufted headboard, a pink carpet and i got all of my furniture from them. Best quality and low prices. i highly rercomend Zarin to everyone.
p.s i found zarin in Zagat as the #1 upholstery store....check them out!
I too think the "new" look at Harry Zarin is great and Judy is the best. But, the prices are definitely not low, a friend wnted to have a poufy footstool made and the price was $900. They had some ready made in the main floor shop for $300.
I have used them for various things and am very satisfied but lower prices wouldn't hurt.

Love this store too. Everyday I walk by to go to subway they have new things in windows. I feel like we have Bloomies downtown. I buy all my gift for everything there. Great frames and gifts. Dog bags too. Fabrics always changing but prices still really low. How do they do it? Need to reupholster sofa. I found a fabric and Zarin for %5.00 less a yard than Joes.
Bobby Zarin has something do with the success of this firm? If so, quite remarkable for an airhead who could not even master his courses at the University of Miami in the late 60's...a real lightweight!
Zarin is my favorite store to buy fabric. My grandmother shopped there, my mother shopped there and bought us everything for our first apt there. I love Judy and Wilner. They even came to my apt to measure the same day I was in the store! ( LUCKY I GUESS!). it is nice to to know there are still family business around instead of the cold home depots of the world.
