2004_9_28_light1.jpgLotsa light. There are many places to buy lighting, but we have found that for a wide selection, reduced prices, and great local service, Lighting By Gregory on the Bowery is our top pick. Ordering online can be good, but if you need to see, touch and feel the object, this is better.

2004_9_28_light2.jpgChoosing lighting is daunting, and Lighting By Gregory is a little like looking for cheese at Zabar's; if you know what you want it is easy, if you don't, it can be overwhelming. Therefore, we recommend narrowing down your search as much as possible before you go in and ASK FOR HELP. The people at LBG are not shysters, and have been very helpful every time we've been.

Lighting By Gregory sells a very wide range of brands, from designer lighting such as Flos and Artemide to more rough and ready names such as WAC and Juno. They sell wall fixtures, floor lamps, undercounter lights, track lights, and more. They also do a big business in ceiling fans. MGR

This place was recommended to me by the developer of our new construction when we bought a few years ago. We knew no different so bought from there. Little did I know that this was one of the most expensive places to buy from.

A couple of examples:
1. Lutron dimmer was around $50-$60 at LBG whereas is was between $30-%40 on Canal st.
2. 4" trim MR16 recessed lights and the remodeling housing/transformer unit was close to $100 at LBG, and less than $50 a few doors south on Bowery.

LBG is the Gracious Home of lighting. Overpriced but recommended by everyone and anyone who don't know they are getting ripped off.

LBG has the worst customer service ever. I tried to ask some questions 10 mins before closing but they told me that they are preparing to close and so I should come back tomorrow.

Yeah, I didn't want to touch on the less than ideal customer service because the article praises it so much but every time I have been to spend a few hundred $ I have never received good service. There's a complacency that seems to stem from the knowledge that LBG is renowned as the best place for lighting (like some kind of self perpetuating urban myth) so they they don't have to try too hard.

Just blew $850 on two fixtures...I changed my mind about one of them and subsequently found out it was a "special order." Now I have $500 in store credit. I learned this when I finally got through to them, since they could not be bothered to return my calls. Oh, and I also was told it was in. Plus the store is ultra confusing and their website leaves a lot to be desired. Whatever.

I called to find out if they had a light in stock and the price. Not only was the light 50% more than online prices, the sales guy would not tell me if it was in stock until I actually purchased it. Totally poor customer service!

I had purchased 5 high end tract lights (not to mention several other purchases over the past couple of years including an expensive fan which is in transit as I type) from LBG and after some time one of them stopped working. I discoverd that the contact on the tract clip had broken. Thinking I was a "good" customer I brought it in to see if I could get replacement part. The salesman told me I had to buy a entire new fixture and then practically threw me out of the store. "Go to Lendy's," he told me. So heading south a block or so I stopped into New Gereration where they had the part and happily showed me how to change it!

I had a great experience at Lighting By Gregory. I recently purchased a table lamp of of their website, LightingByGregory.com. The lamp was fine, but my two year old thought it was a firemans pole and tipped the lamp over and broke the shade. I called their customer service and they sent me a replacement part within two weeks. They didn't even charge me for the replacement piece. I would stongly suggest this spot.

This store is by far the least expensive. They offer an extensive collection and by simply searching through their showroom which is massive i found what i needed for every area of my home.

I just got home from Lighting By Gregory and you wont believe who was my salesman. Gregory himself was there, he is a 21 year old who knows his product like the back of his hand. He made shopping for what i thought was going to be a nightmare seem so easy and i walked out of the store same day with exactly what i wanted.I would highly recommend Lighting By Gregory and seriously asking for Gregory himself to help you.

I ordered two sconces and tried for several days to contact Lighting by Gregory using not only the 800 number but the direct dial too.
I'm getting the run around with either all lines busy; message center full, web page under construction, etc.
However, they were quick to charge my credit card for the order but there's no way I can check to find out when to expect it.

I had heard several years ago that something like 8 of the lighting stores on the Bowery were actually owned by 1 family (not sure if LBG is part of that) and they set up all the shops with slightly different merchandise so that it is impossible to really comparison shop.

sounds like a nightmare...will avoid like the plague thanks.

Ditto. This place is soo bad. I had the worst experience here. The staff is rude the merchandise are overpriced.

Gregory has got to go!

gregory's is an over rated store with the laziest salesmen. I just priced the same light head at LBG...$97.00, Lendy's...$83....star electric..$75.
What would you do?

I had the worst experience with Lighting by Gregory. My most recent purchase was with Lumens Light + Living. Best online shopping experience, ask for Peter he's the best customer service rep. I love my new pendants!

What a great experience. The selection, prices and knowledge is unbeatable. Thank you to my salesman David for a superior job. I can't wait to start my next project with you.

Wow, what a store. The selection is unbelievable. I had a great experience and would highly recomend it to everyone. It's nice to find a store in NYC that has everything you could possibly need in lighting but are helpful to.

Nightmare of an experiance. This is an internet scam. Be aware that they will charge you for merchandise that they do not stock then give you excuse after excuse for why it is not available, all after you have paid in advance for the product.
Do not do business with a company like Lighting By Gregory. Find a real company that actually has a warehous with inventory in it.

I purchased a $300 item online and i received a piece that looked like a return that someone modified and sent back. They resold the item complete with rusty screws. (I confirmed this with the manufacturer - that they do not produce a piece with the useless wire arrangement I received.) Bad, absent, customer service. Fraudulent practices. Lighting by Gregory is a scam. At best they are so poorly run that they don't know that they are ripping people off.

I regret having purchased from Lighting by Gregory. All but one of my visits to the store - twice to shop for lights, once to purchase lights, once to pick up lights - were bad experiences. The other experience was just mediocre. Salespeople give brusque answers to questions; never fully answer the question; shrug their shoulders if they're not able to help. Just called them because there was an error in my order. I was made to feel that it was my own fault for not checking carefully enough before leaving the store. Now I'll probably wait another 3 weeks for what I ordered. How can I express my disgust? I'd rather buy lighting from a rotting corpse.
