Aerogel: What the Hell is This Stuff?

2004_7_aerogel.jpgThis came across our desk from SOMEWHERE, and we haven't been sure what to do with it. Aerogel is a remarkable silicon-based material that is exceptionally porous and - sooner or later - will show up in furniture or home products near you. it is 99.8% air, provides 39 times more insulating than the best fiberglass insulation, and is 1,000 times less dense than glass. That means that even as you look at it, it is barely there. It provides so much insulation that it can protect a flower from a blow torch only inches away. It is used primarily in space flight right now (to collect stardust), and is creeping its way into the insulation industry. We just want to sit on it. MGR
