Flush is the thing to be. No, not in the Bathroom Month sense of the word. Flush modern doors! It's tough to acheive a detail that puts a door surface flush to a wall surface without a jamb of some sort, but Modern Doors Direct offers them up in their Linea Collection...

Modern Doors Direct provides flush-to-the-wall doors complete with the hardware that makes it all possible. And they're outfitted with Soss Invisible Hinges, so you don't have butt hinges messing up the pristine aesthetic. Each door is complete with a skinny little aluminum frame and finished in a range of veneers from zebra wood to oak, or primed for painting.

This feels like a stage prop to me. I'm curious what it looks like in an actual living space.

their gorgeous to live with -- this brand and other similar ones are popular here in Europe.

I looked into this door, but it was quite expensive... then I just wanted the soss hinges, but was unsure how to handle the union with the drywall in a retrofit... anyone know?

With a lot of patience and skill, you can achieve the same look with traditional pre-hung doors (albeit, with the hinges exposed). In the right context it's quite striking.

Your drywall installer and carpenter will hate you for these...
...and easily double your per-door installation price.

monika1: How expensive are we talking about, per door? Did you end up buying from this company? How were they to deal with?

I found out. They're $1000 each, and I would estimate probably another $1000/each for a builder to install, since they are installed in a very "custom" manner.

OK, on to Plan B.
