Messiest Closet 2006: Holly's Teetering Mess

Name: Holly in Yorkville
Location: UES
Size: 44 x 45"

Pitch:

Fibber McGee is alive and living on the Upper East Side! He's in my closet and I would love to kill him. My closet is so bad that I had to add a latch so that the door will close.

This 44 x 45", unsquare space with a 9-foot ceiling is stuffed with clothes, coats, shoes, boots, linens, bags, a laundry box, iron, ironing board, quilts (in those pillow cases), sewing machine, vacuum, rug shampooer, beach chair, fabric, Halloween costumes, photos, journals, Playbills, scripts, books and other miscellaneous clutter.

In short: way too much! But it's the only closet I have.

It's been teetering on the edge for some time but went totally off the rails this winter. My plan was to purge and paint this spring/summer, so this contest couldn't be better timed.

This could be why.

This plastic box is actually a good solution for the laundry problem.

I'm voting in favor because it's at least clear that you are making an effort to help solve your closet problem. I must say that I've been very unsympathetic in this contest thus far.

Good luck!

Also, it's her only closet! It's not a matter of decluttering, it's going to make a huge impact to get an expert to talk her through really using the space. My vote for sure.

Sorry, this closet is fairly organized as compared to many, many I've seen. At least she has boxes and hanging racks and such.

The closet is very small and if she can get it to function better it will be quite a feat. My congratulations on any attempt. Still, for sure, if I only had one closet, it would look worse than this.

I'm voting for you since 1) you didn't seem to tumble everything you owned on your floor in an effort to make it look worse and 2) this is your only closet, which gets my sympathy.

It didn't look to me as if any of the contestants had "fabricated" the mess in their closets.

It did to me. There's no way of knowing for sure either way.

This one gets my vote. The photos seem honest. Their real problem is that, through no fault of their own, they need a closet organizer because their closet space is just so small. I'd rather someone win this that has *tried* to keep their closet tidy, but simply has a lack of space, than someone who has big storage space, but is just a slob.

Maybe we're already too far into the contest to change the rules, but I'd say the criteria for winning needs to be re-thunk. Otherwise the contest just rewards slobs and penalizes effort.

Seems to me there is nothing a non-professional could do with this tiny closet other than build more closets! But this is the sole closet -- so let's see whether the pros can do anything with it! This closet definitely gets my vote.

This tiny closet gets my vote. Would want to
see what the closet organizer would do to help
clear the clutter without throwing everything
out. It will need a miracle worker to organize
this closet.

I'm in total accord with Fiona on this one. An honest attempt at order but still a hopeless mess.

Count me in on wanting to see a professional organizer work on this one! Holly, you've done everything basic right, and I still don't see how you get at things without having half your belongings drop on your head.
