Today we visited Riian and Riley, the winners of our Messiest Closet Contest. Bill Skinner from Astech Closet Systems was there on Monday to give them a new plan (see below) and we got a chance to see things in person (see above). The closet is only the beginning of the problem!
The profile? Riian and Riley are the nicest couple, and they have a great one bedroom apartment in the East Village. Married one year ago, they also have a lot of stuff. Riley said that after coming back from an one year anniversary trip to Mexico a few weeks ago, he realized for the first time how cluttered their apartment was. Isn't this the way it is? You have to go away to come back and see things as they are?
They recieved a tremendous number of wedding gifts last year that are lovely but take up space. Riian also works for a handbag company, so she has a lot of bags. There's a boomerang collection, many shoes, cool exercise equipment (including a pogo stick that allows you to leap 6' off of the ground). In short, over four years of life, Riian and Riley have collected much more than they have let go of.
The Prescription? Clean out the bedroom so that there is 10% open space in all areas. Deep editing is required. Astech Closet's makeover of one of their bedroom closets is the start. This will require removing everything from the closet and NOT putting everything back. After that, we recommend a four week deep treatment of the bedroom and we're going to give them a copy of the 8 Step Cure to help them.
We also made some notes in the picture for how the end wall could be better arranged. Next we're going to visit when their closet is done and then follow their progress.
We're here to help.

Anyone with a boomerang collection has to be cool! Can't wait to see the after pics.
And how does one dispose of a boomerang? Wouldn't it keep coming back?
Good one wende!
I offer this whimsical idea (thank you, design*sponge), for the fireplace. It takes up so little space!

What sort of pogo stick allows you to jump 6 feet off the ground?!? I need me one of those!!
Molly those are so great!
Hey guys...it's RILEY.
Fabulous, Molly--I love how they remind you that putting them in front of a fire would "be bad". Love them!
I got chastised for pointing this out, but it was pretty obvious looking at their closet (and the amount of bags out in the open) that the closet layout was not the big issue. The other finalist also seemed to have the same issue.
Glad that AT and Astech are helping!
Do you need a helmet with that pogo stick? Where can I get one anyway?
As a senior member of Riley's family I am pleased with the momentous "Win" that Riley and Riian have experienced...however, I feel that I must admit that the problem of having tooooooo much "Stuff" is genetically linked......
also....in anwer to Wende's question regarding the return of Boomerangs......they Wood !
Wedding gifts are what drive the real estate industry.. Suddenly newlyweds feel the need to move, overburdened by all the STUFF.
If the boomerangs are the cool decorated ones, they'd look great on a wall.
I second that 'collections onto the walls' idea!
