Messiest Closet 2006: Riian's New Closet

7-21--closet1.jpg

Just about three weeks ago, Bill Skinner from Astech Closet delivered Riian and Riley's new closet and just this past week, they finally got all their stuff moved in. It was a great finish to a the very silliest of contests and we couldn't be more pleased to have played a role in helping someone out. Here it is, direct from Riian:

I finally am getting all the shelves filled inside the closet and miracle of miracles I am now able to close the door of the closet! Who knew those doors even worked! We've gotten rid of the non-functional desk, and now in just a few more steps I will have everything squared away in the bedroom. Shwew!...

I don't know if you had heard from Bill, but we had quite an adventure the day of installation. We had a pretty major ceiling collapse in the bedroom just minutes before Bill was to arrive. Of course we had not cleared the closet upgrade with the super, but had no choice but to call him since there was a giant dripping hole in the ceiling and a mountain of debris all over the tv, my dresser, riley's armoir, etc.

So...I call Bill, and of course he is running early and is almost to my apartment (the guy gets up at the crack of dawn to start work...it's insane!) There is no turning back. He comes in and just moments later the super arrives. Bill totally plays it cool, and helps us look at the damage and determine the cause of the collapse.

A little of my husband Riley's sweet talk goes on and the super agrees to allow Bill and his team to do their work first. 45 minutes later we have a gorgeous new closet, and it is so clean I never even knew they were there! That's no exaggeration, they were so very speedy and professional. I would recommend them to any of your readers, as well as all my friends and family.

Now the hole in the ceiling, that's another story. It is STILL not fixed. Anyhow, we are just so happy with the new closet digs. Thank you so much!

What an inspiration! Your closet is lovely. I bet it would really pop with nice wooden hangers. Very nice closet ;)

I love seeing the follow-up. Good job.

This is embarassing to admit, but your "before" looks like my "after". How pathetic is that?

It looks fantastic. And they put it in so fast. Do you have room for expansion (the closet looks very full), or are you now on a can't-buy-anything-new-until-something-goes-out schedule?

Hi everyone, thanks for the kind comments.
I know the closet looks full, but it's really so so much better, I can't even tell you. Most of the stuff that I had before I couldn't reach because of the giant pile in front of the closet. I got rid of a LOT of stuff in my purge, and heartbreakingly even a few bags. I still have more work to do to edit down my wardrobe and bag collection, but I feel so much better about it. Getting that kick start from the contest was all the difference.
From now on it is one piece in, one or two pieces out...promise!
Thanks to everyone, especially Apartmenttherapy.com and Bill Skinner and his crew from Astech Closets!

As a touch up - DRAWERS! Drawers would look great in those shelf areas so that you don't have to see all the clutter.

Jackie -
There are still DOORS on that closet, I think, from the picture, you don't really see everything until you open them.

Drawers probably cost kind of a lot extra, and their hardware actually take up a certain amount of space, themselves.

Anyway, I think they just have the doors open for US to see at the moment. I bet that now that there's less stuff, so that they CAN close them now, they probably will.

Riian, I too just gave my closets a redo and I couldn't be more pleased! These are the tips are swear by: The more uniformed the closet the neater it will look. So, if you go to ikea and get those wooden hangers or the steel version
it'll give the closet an EVEN cleaner look. Also, if you organize your closet by color/ or simply from light to dark clothing...that'll also make a difference. Oh, and every week give your closet the once over to make sure it's not getting out of hand.
Just trying to help out a fellow (former)closet-clutter-bug. ;o)
