03-08-simons.jpgBathroom month wouldn't be bathroom month without a word about Simon's Hardware & Bath. Want to know where to go for kitchen & bath hardware, as well as locks, door knobs, switchplates, hooks and pulls? Professional designers go to Simon's at East 29th Street for one-stop shopping in common and hard to find brands...

We've worked with them on a number of occassions and they never fail to provide great service and huge selection. A good place to go and look around, too, if you're not yet sure what you want.

2004_12_2_toilet.gifMUG says, "Everything's gorgeous, but not cheap. " and NYMag calls the staff "unusally friendly" and names it Best Hardware Store of 2004.

If you find what you are looking for at Simon's keep in mind that other places are cheaper, notably Smolka on east 33rd street.

the item in the picture looks like something I saw in a documentary about a Dutch prison.

I saw that pic and thought to myself, that looks the toilets they have in prison cells... Jonathan D. beat me to the correctional facility comparison.

Jonathan and Carolyn must visit some swanky prisons. I just wanted to comment on Simons. They are fast, our contractor got a nice discount for us BUT their hours suck. If you work at all, your only option is Saturday.

posted by raquel on 2004-12-02 14:03:47

Hmmm, Jonathan... "documentary" about a Dutch prison, huh? Is that what the kids are calling them these days?! ANYway...

Cellmate Hans Brinker notwithstanding, that sink combo could be STUNNING in a powder room, with some sort of chocolate or plum baroque damask wallpaper or something... or against some sort of limestone wall.

Staff exceptionally friendly? Maybe to NY Magazine, but not to the average citizen. It was like shopping in Barneys. They have hundreds of gorgeous (and over-priced) fixtures. Now, if you can just throw money at your problems, or decorator, ran to ol' Simon;if you are like the rest of us, head to Deco in Brooklyn.

Where is Deco in Brooklyn?

OK, where can you get that toilet/sink combo thing you featured?

posted by Nick on 2004-12-03 05:10:43

That urinal is EXACTLY what you find in a jail. DUI's not withstanding, why on earth would I want to use something so obviously uncomfortable for a private activity anyway?

posted by Aaron G. on 2004-12-03 12:38:18

Other thing about the toilet/sink combo pictured is that it doesn't seem entirely sanitary, especially if you were going to be brushing your teeth at that sink- the whole keeping the toilet 5 feet away from your brush thing to avoid the toilet spray- I know you could put the seat down, but how many guys do that.

posted by Carolyn on 2004-12-03 15:51:39

Simple problem to that toothbrush issue - keep them (the toothbrushes) in the kitchen. I mean, come on, don't be so silly. We eat pesticides on our fruit and insane amounts of other chemicals and preservatives in our food, we breathe in carbon dioxide in our air, we surround ourselves in ultra violet radiation from our sun, and who knows what is in our water making it unfit to drink from the tap... If our bodies were *really* that sensitive, we all would have been dead years ago.

That jail-aesthetics has it's beauty.
Bare an simple, I even would like to see the faucet double as a handheld shower.
Not for everybody, but for certain circumstances where space is limited, for a second restroom or for a "transit hotel", it might work.

I am familiar with pricing of architectural & decorative hardware as well as kitchen and bath fixtures. Simon's may be "pricey" with some items (but remember, everything is negotiable) but most of their products are of fair market value. Some places that are SUPER cheap usually don't stay in business that long. Simon's is the oldest hardware store in Manhattan which should say something.

posted by Tony on 2005-05-28 23:55:27

Simon's has an annual forty percent off Omnia sale which you can't beat off the internet on many pieces.

And if you compare Simon's to Barney's, then Smolka is more like Conway, and it isn't that much cheaper.

And so where is Deco in Brooklyn?

I like Simon's alot. Forgive my previous jailhouse jibberish.

They have some cool stuff. I ordered faucets which were shipped from France and took a zillion years to arrive. When they finally did, my contractor couldn't read the installation instructions as they were in French.
C'est la vie.

Well....speaking of toilet sink combos... I just happen to have an antique zinc one that had been at Sing Sing prison. It's in fabulous condition and would make quite a converstion piece for a contemporary home...the lines ar great. Something to think about. I have not deceided if I should keep it or sell it...anyway just thought I would add this bit of info to the mix.
Take care and happy flushing!!
