Systematic moving. Hmm. Adding to our list of recommended movers, Moishe's easily makes the list. One of the biggest companies in the city, with a much more corporate approach and an aim to be a "moving system" supplier, not just your average mover, Moishe's offers many specialized services, including a piano moving department and storage for interior designers who are wanting to temporarily clear out a client's apartment...
Local and long distance moving is available, as well as storage. Special needs is their middle name.
Recommended by New York Magazine ("There are plenty of solid local outfits but our favorite is Moishe's"), and garnering an 8.9 rating at Citysearch, we have found Moishe's extremely organized and pleasant to deal with.
Rates vary and free estimates are available, but we have heard that you can expect around $81-$131 per hour during peak times (the beginning and end of the month) and $10 less at other times. Boxes can be had for $3-$14 and can be purchased online.

I used them for a Manhattan move - they were excellent. Turned up on time, extremely pleasant to work with and fast. I recommend them to all my friends.
I used them two times. Both times they were excellent and even cheaper then their original estimates. They get a big thumbs up in my book!
I used them once -- YEARS ago, East Village to Brooklyn -- and they were a mess. I was scheduled for the morning, and they didn't show up until very late in the afternoon, and with a crew of guys who were grumpy and exhausted and being forced to work a second shift. It sucked. The company was totally uncommunicative all day. They just kept stringing me on.
Moving day is always bad enough, but they made it worse.

They did a great job for me about 8 years ago in Brooklyn. I had to ride to my new place in the cab of the truck sandwiched tightly between two hunky Israeli movers. I do believe I overtipped them due to their "hunky"ness.

These guys moved me from Philadelphia to New York back in 1999, and they were great - showed up (in Philly) right on time, and took less than an hour to move me into my new place once they arrived. My biggest expense was paying for the driving round trip between cities (which was to be expected).
I only wish I had used them instead of taking a recommendation for Flat Rate when I moved again. Flat Rate showed up late (so late that we missed the freight elevator cutoff in my new building), didn't submit the required insurance paperwork (even though I called at least 8 times to check on this), lost or broke at least one lamp, and decided that they didn't feel like taking some of my stuff (because it was hot out) to the point where the company had to send another crew the next morning to finish moving me out of my old place. that's a move from hell.

Just used them very recently for a short move in Manhattan. We picked them because we wanted a professional insured company rather than risk it with a cheaper, amateur service. Should have saved the money, they sent what appeared to be two teenagers who didn't know how to handle large boxes or my mattress, didn't have the tools to take apart my bedframe and then charged us extra for insurance on the spot when we thought it had been included in the price. Not recommended.

i had a really great experience with moishes. They came exactly on time, they were quick and very curteous. To top it of their estimated price quote was less then what they actually charged in the end. Granted I had only a small studio's worth of stuff to move, but I was very happy with the outcome.

moishe's moved us across the country from NYC to SF last october.
because we had a month between when we got here and the stuff arrived (we were looking for a place in the interim and staying in temp. housing), they had to move it in and out of the truck several times (into truck, out of truck into storage, back into truck, then to SF).
the crew that delivered our stuff to us in SF was downright AWFUL.
they slammed boxes down the outside steps at our place in SF, brought bad attitudes, and broke about 20 pieces of vintage ceramics i had collected for years somewhere in the process.
i wouldn't recommend them to anyone. period.

I was shocked to see Moishe's advertised here on your site. I used them once for a move from the East village to Brooklyn. They were horrible, un-pleasant, and un-professional. I would warn people against them.

Interesting. I used Moishe's once and they were...okay. I've used Flat Rate twice and they've made moving absolutely painless (and I HATE moving). Extremely quick and efficient, they'll box all electronics (TV, DVD player, etc.) for you, and well. They take extreme care in wrapping and protecting furniture, and also bring a wardrobe box for hanging clothes--less for you to pack.. The movers were friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommened.

I have two friends who've had horrible experiences with Moishe's so I have never used them. I did use Flat Rate for two in-city moves and was exceptionally pleased with the service. They were so quick and professional. I think not paying by the hour really helps in terms of moving -- they have no incentive to take a long time!

Used them twice and would use them again. Professional, careful and fast. NO BS with quoted price.

I used Moishe's two years ago because, like someone else said, I wanted someone who was insured and they were willing to provide a binding estimate. I threw the first crew out of my house because they were so nasty and tried to up the price considerably. The second crew, although still surly, was more professional in that they knew how to pack electronics and everything arrived in one piece. They also managed to move the furniture without a dent or scratch in anything. BUT they got lost in their one-mile drive from one place to the other; very unnerving when an hour has passed and the truck should have arrived in 10 minutes.

I'm thrilled to see your positive review of Moishe's!
I have used them twice, the first time in 1992 when I moved into my first home in Nassau County from an apartment in Astoria.
Efficient and organized are the two best words I can think of to summarize my experienced with Moishe's. I highly recommend this superb moving service.

HORRIBLE.
I used Moishe's on a move from LA-NYC. The LA crew was a dream; the NYC crew a nightmare. I would NEVER recommend them. Rude, beligerant and careless -- and that's the tip of the iceberg. They delivered my couch, which we realized would not fit in the front door and with rain looming, they threatened to just leave it outside saying, "Lady, it's our job to deliver to the address, that's it." This was 12 years ago and I still remember their impossible tone and attitude. With the help of friends and my landlord at the time, we were able to creatively get the couch in another way. Maybe in all this time, they've changed, but having moved at least 7 times since, I don't see a need to give them a second chance. There are others out there.

I just used Moishe's. They were quick and careful, but the pricing was BS. Guy on the job tried to charge more than quoted, storage site (for in between step) was full so we waited half an hour while they sat around trying to find another, etc. All in all, we weren't horribly ripped off, but they heavily round up on the time. Factor at least 25% longer than you think it will take (and than it will actually take).

I had a bad experience when I used them a couple of years ago. They came with the wrong size truck, were surly and unpleasant from the start, took lots of long smoking breaks outside near the truck, scratched up much of the furniture even though part of what was supposedly taking so long was wrapping the furniture to protect it from scratches (corners, etc. were left unwrapped, and they actually put a band of tight duck tape directly around some of my wood pieces). The company office was unresponsive to my calls, they were completely overbooked, and it seemed to me that, overall, they figured they were doing so much business, what did it matter if the fringes got a little fried with incompetent workers with noxious morale. They didn't overcharge, but boy, I would have paid A LOT more to have avoided that experience.

WORST MOVING COMPANY I HAVE EVER USED. PERIOD. Even worse was trying to follow up for a claim for broken items. It was a total nightmare. THESE GUYS SUCK!

I used them to move my apartment so we could do some renovation work for water damage to our kitchen & floors in 1/2 our apartment. We got an estimate from one of their salesmen, and we were clear with the him that we needed a total price for a full move out (including major appliances), storage, and full back move in for our insurance company to approve. The salesman claimed the price he gave us was more than sufficient to cover the move.
After we got the estimate for the move and it came time to do the renovation, we decided to leave the major appliances in place (covered w/ plastic), and store as much as possible in our bedroom. We moved anything fragile / precious, electronics, and lamps to cut down on the amount the movers had to do.
When it came time to do the move out, we were pleased with the foreman and crew they sent. Everything went fairly smooth, and we only had to send 1 couch, 1 wall unit, and 4 rugs to storage. At the end of the day, the price for the move out was roughly 3/4 of the original estimate.
The problems came on the move in. The dispatch claimed we had a 'binding estimate' to move back in which was the same price as the original estimate for moving everything. Then, the movers were 5 hours late, and every time I called dispatch, they claimed the crew was delayed in traffic. I found out from the foreman they actually were at another job before they came to us. Then, they informed us our 'binding estimate' didn't specify a 'full move' back in, and they wouldn't unpack boxes with kitchen items, books, etc. I had call dispatch and agree to even more $ to get them to unpack.
Basically, the crew was great, but the sales staff and dispatch are dishonest. The sales person claimed no responsibility for the mistakes he made on our paperwork, or the fact that he didn't specify a full move back in. The job ended up costing more than what he originally estimated, even though they didn't move or store nearly the amount of items that the estimate included.

Moishe's moving moved our one bedroom apartment on 2/1/08 and they were absolutely terrible. Charged me 425 for a small move that was timeslot for 1-3pm they showed up at 8pm. The movers after being so late had the nerve to ask me if they can stop by the store to pick up soda. I said no and did not even bother with a tip. Two guys who were really slow, go with Rabbit for the same price gives you three guys.

THE WORST MOVERS -- EVER!
The DROPPED my mattress and box spring from the second floor down to ground level before boxing and wrapping them ONLY HALFWAY. The items were damaged.
They bitched, moaned, and whined the entire day and before even getting two hours into the job said, "Oh, yeah, ten hours easy!" They took my armoire doors off and then put them back on UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS and got mad at me when I pointed it out. Several other items were damaged. I wouldn't use Moishe's again if THEY PAID ME!

Chicago:
Their worker threatened me and I'm having to file a police report. They damaged several items. Extremely rude.
Our surveillance video cameras caught them dropping the mattress and box spring from the second floor onto a lower level and then wrapping them only halfway -- soiling them as they went. Several items were broken. Smaller boxes were stacked below six much bigger, heavier boxes.
I found it impossible to believe these guys are professional movers. I would have done better with a rental truck and my grandmother!

Handled with care
I have no problem with someone cleaning out my cabinets, closets and dressers. OK theyâre not exactly âcleaning them outâ, theyâre packing me up. For the few of you out there who are on the fence about letting someone else do the packing for you I have something to share with you all, MOISHEâS MOVING. These guys come in and pack everything according to your specifications. Everything was wrapped and packed up and ready to go in hours. Iâm very pleased to have selected their services.

We have moved 5 times in the past few years. We were very excited to try Moishe's having had bad experiences with movers previously. But in the end they proved to be unreliable and did not fairly compensate us for our loss. We chose them because their quote was reasonable. Not cheap, but fair. Also their customer service people are extremely good at appearing honest and trustworthy. Lastly, they had the availability to move us within the short time frame we needed- between ending one job in NYC and starting another one across the country in California.
In short- we do not recommend using Moishe's. We only recommend them if you do not need them to pack ANY of your belongings. They packed our hanging clothes, kitchen items, lamps and furniture. Big mistake. They broke the 4 out of our 5 lamps. Crushed the corner of our beautiful desk. Shattered the arm of a dining room chair. Insisted on removing the legs to the couch, despite our begging and pleading that the legs are not designed to be removed and were not removed when the couch was brought into the apartment.
Upon delivery they could not reassemble the legs to the couch and in trying they stripped out the screws and damaged the couch. They packed our filthy vacuum cleaner in the box with all of my clean business suits. So I had to have everything dry cleaned.
Finally upon watching the truck pull away with all of our belongings we saw our bed mattress tied to the outside of the truck! We were heartbroken to see our belongings treated with such disrespect.
Also, in previous moves we were offered insurance on the day of the move. But when they came in on moving day they told us that in NY the movers are not allowed to sell insurance. They did not tell us this before moving day and so there was nothing we could do at that point. All of our computers were packed and the internet had been disconnected the day before. I had no option for purchasing insurance separately. We were given only one option at that time- to sign the paperwork that stated our belongings are only worth 60 cents per pound! That means for each approx $100 lamp we were only compensated approx $9 dollars!! For the approx $1500 desk, compensation was about $60. For the approx $4,000 couch, compensation was approx = $120. For the $800 dining room chair we got approx $15 dollars.
We will never use Moishe's again!
