Adding to our list of recommended movers, Moishe's easily makes the list. One of the biggest companies in the city, with a much more corporate approach and an aim to be a "moving system" supplier, not just your average mover, Moishe's offers many specialized services, including a piano moving department and storage for interior designers who are wanting to temporarily clear out a client's apartment...
Local and long distance moving is available, as well as storage. Special needs is their middle name. Moishe's is also Going Green this year, and is the first Green moving company on the East Coast.
Recommended by New York Magazine ("There are plenty of solid local outfits but our favorite is Moishe's") and garnering 4.5 stars on Citysearch, we have found Moishe's extremely organized and pleasant to deal with.
Rates vary and free estimates are available, but we have heard that you can expect around $81-$131 per hour during peak times (the beginning and end of the month) and $10 less at other times. Boxes can be had for $3-$14 and can be purchased online.

I've never used them for moving from apartment to apartment, but I have used them for storage and moving into storage twice and both times were terrible experiences. The first time the storage facility, had a fire, all of my things were soaked with water and they didn't call me until one month after it had happened to clear things out so everything I owned was destroyed by mildew. It was terrible and I got no compensation for it. Like an idiot I tried them again five years later because they had the best price and that time they broke my desk and lost a box with very important and irreplaceable photos. They have good deals but don't fall for it! It's worth the extra money elsewhere.

Oh and the people I would recommend are Flat Rate Movers. They had really reasonable prices, fantastic customer service and it was the most efficient and pain-free move I've ever had and I should know because I've moved 30 times.

I hired Moishe's for a move and it was a terrible experience. One of the movers was rude to both me and his colleague. He then tried to make me pay much more than the quoted rate, and he didn't want to record the cash payment I gave him. Four hours after the moving truck left, he called me and told me I had miscalculated the tip and that I owed him more. He called me four times and threatened to come to my house to get the money.
My one and only piece of antique furniture was so badly broken I had to get rid of it.
When I called the office to complain, my calls (three of them) were not returned.
Beware of Moishe's.

I used Moishe's LIC storage facility for a few months last year. I stored the contents of my apartment while I settled into a permanent space. Made a reservation for a particularly sized space, but when I arrived it wasn't available. It was clear that the central office had not transferred my reservation to the guys at the facility's office. Some gentle persistence on my part resulted in getting a slightly larger room at the same price as the smaller. Still, frustrating. I mean, I had a reservation.
When I moved out, it took forever (and many phone calls) to have my deposit refunded. That concerned me. I also had a hard time speaking with anyone who was actually in charge of the deposits. Again, a lot of persistence was required.
My sense was that IF I had had a major problem like the first poster did, Moishe's would not have assisted me in any way. Surprised to read AT's recommendation for this company, as the service I received was far from exceptional. I would not store anything of great value at a Moishe's facility.
I am curious to know more about what criteria the AT people use to develop such a recommendation.

I had a similar bad experience with Moishe's that I am still dealing with. I stored my life in the LIC location for a year while i was away on business. While the movers themselves were very friendly, the customer service was terrible. I vacated my storage until 3 months ago and am still waiting to get my deposit returned. After 10 calls and messages left, a VP called me back yesterday and promised a check in the mail tomorrow. We shall see. I've already filed a complaint with the BBB.
Terrible

I used them to store my stuff and then move it to CA after I'd settled in So Cal. The office people leave something to be desired and the mover guys' foreman was reasonably intelligent, but the other two guys, I was a little worried about. So my conclusion is that if these guys get the thumbs up from NY mag, the rest of them must totally stink.

Wow, I'm surprised to see so many negative experiences here! We used Moishe's this past December to move from Brooklyn to Queens and had absolutely no complaints-- the quote they gave us was very reasonable and binding, they showed up on time, were pleasant, worked quickly, and our stuff showed up in Queens in good order.
(I suppose I should add, in the interest of full disclosure, that my husband and I packed up everything ourselves, so they essentially provided the "muscle," and we moved our "valuables" (computers and music gear) in a Zip Car by ourselves)
In any case, I'm sorry that the rest of you didn't have a similar experience.
