As we search for the best moving companies in New York to add to our Stores Guide, we have to look harder and harder. This is our latest tip.
OZ Moving & Storage was started by Avi Oz in 1993 and is now a full service company with continuous good reviews from Citysearch and New York Magazine (4 stars)...

They offer a wide variety of services and promotions, but what particularly caught our eye was their list of recommended partners and service providers, such as locksmiths and cleaning services.

Not from my experience. We called them twice to come over and give us an estimate, and twice they didn't show up or call. That was the end of that. We suspect it was because they felt our apartment move was too small to be worth their time.
Oz moved me this weekend, or rather put all my stuff in storage. They were prompt, efficient, friendly. My only concern sis that they wrapped a painting for me in a way that made the artist cringe when I described what they did. I'll let you know how my boxes survive this experience.
OZ moved my stuff for two moves. Both times they did a great job. Were on time, efficient, very polite, careful with my stuff, etc. They're not cheap though.
OZ moved me yesterday so the memory is still fressshhh in my mind - they were great. it takes them a while to thaw but they are all wonderfully helpful, efficient and polite. thanks, apartmenttherapy for a great ny tip!
These guys were TOP-NOTCH. Not only did a co-worker recommend Oz, but another friend who used to work for moving. He said most moving companies rip you off, with the exception of Oz, being the most honest. If I have to move again, I will not hesitate to use them. The move was stress-free.
I cannot recommend them enough! Why?
1) I got a live, friendly person on the phone who assessed my apt. (no fancy consultation visit) and gave me a quote. They came in at almost HALF what another mover quoted me for a 1-bedroom. Once I knew I wanted to use them, they asked for a $50 deposit. I thought their price was more than reasonable.
2) They gave me options for a move on 10% off days and threw in 2 wardrobe boxes free.
3) They called to confirm the move a few days before.
4) On the day of the move, they were running 10-15 minutes late, and called me to let me know.
5) The 4 movers who showed up were the friendliest guys I've ever seen. They were HAPPY to be doing their job and just made the day/process go smoothly. They knew exactly what they were doing, and carefully blanket-covered all furniture head to toe (not just the tops or bottoms).
6) I had packed my boxes (probably is more expensive if you're going for the full service move), but they helped to get the last few boxes taped up and ready to go.
7) NO hidden fees! The foreman was fair to his fellow-movers (I tipped them all equally and he gave them their tips in front of me), and the final price was EXACTLY as I was quoted when I first called.
8) The foreman made sure to place all furniture, boxes where I wanted. They also made sure I checked the truck to ensure all my belongings were unloaded.
In the end, I still came out spending much less-- even with a tip--than if I had used the other movers!
I cannot recommend this company.
I got a Âmaximum cost estimate, which I paid, and was told IÂd get a refund once the move was completed. After the move, the foreman said I had to wait until they got back to determine the refund but that theyÂd call me.
After 2 months with no call, I called Oz who now said that they donÂt give refunds. I told him that was not what I was told so I wanted some action. He told me to call a woman in Billing for an invoice who told a different story: I would have received a refund except my move took longer than was estimated. I said they only took four hours to wrap, pack, and load my furniture and that meant the travel time, estimated for 30 minutes, took 6 hours.
I wanted to see a copy of the record she was quoting. I asked for an invoice with a breakdown of the time spent. She said that it would be sent right away. I didnÂt receive it so after 2 weeks I sent 3 separate written requests reiterating the problem. I asked if I was charged for the hour the foreman talked on his cell phone, meal breaks during the move, and if I saved money by the movers not picking up all the garbage left throughout me building.
After a few months of being ignored, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Oz now wanted to talk but still didnÂt send the invoice. They eventually sent a cash payment to settle the case which I took because I wasnÂt sure how much longer theyÂd be in business. By this time, their formerly beautiful, interactive, animated website had degraded into a cheap, do-it-yourself webpage.
Although Oz is a licensed contractor, they admit that they donÂt make or maintain time records of their moves. Oz got the time used by looking at what the employees put on their timesheets for the day (conflict of interest). If there was no time record, the woman from billing must have been making up the numbers she quoted. Oz never answered my complaint of the foreman spending an hour on the cell phone but I guess he didnÂt put that on his timesheet.
I cannot begin to tell you how bad this moving company is. I was moving less than 30 blocks on the same side of town. They sent four guys, two of which I never saw one did all the work and the others, who knows. They arrived 40 min. late but made me sign saying they were there at 9:00 am, they just had to park, made me give them quarters for the meter that they never used and finished at 5:00 pm. I was their first and only move and they took their sweet time. The actual cost was $600 higher than the estimate. I cant express to you enough, please don't go with this company unless of course you have money to throw away. Oh yes, one other thing, they destroyed my new hardwood floors in my new apt. Icing on the cake. I tell everyone I know, go with anyone BUT OZ. MOVERS BEWARE!!!

I used OZ about 3 months ago and they were awful. Initially they came in cheaper than others and they seemed to have relatively good reviews so we went with them. They charged a $50.00 deposit which is fine.
The day of the move they showed up late. We signed all the forms and found out though they initially told us they have insurance, we found out you have to pay ALOT for it.
So we said no to the insurance and crossed our fingers that we packed well enough. Then they told us they wouldn't move certain items that we had packed well with bubble and cardboard unless they were put inside one of their raggedy boxes that looked like it had been used and reused over 100 times. This of course we had to pay for. I think it was around $30 per gross box! Even after we kept saying no we don't want their extra boxes they still used them and charged us. Then to drive 8 blocks they said that they would take lunch and charge us. Fine whatever. So they start moving boxes and would literallly slam things down constantly telling me they're the best and the fastest. Things that said fragile, and nothing on top and this side up meant nothing to them. While unpacking I found one of my boxes with glasses in it being crushed by a much heavier box that had been put on top. Then they stop coming for a while and I find them hanging out talking in our stairwell trying to kill time to make more money. So we get them upstairs to finalize the bill. Starting at 9:20 meant "lets just say 9" and then finishing at 2:30 after wasting time in the stairs was "lets just round to 3, so 9-3" and of course we forgot we had paid a $50 deposit a month before. They conveniently forgot to remind us. Thankfully we packed well and only 1 thing got broken, but I would NEVER recommend them to anyone.

Well, our experience with Oz was neither terrible nor great. My main complaint is that the final charge was significantly higher than the estimate. I don't think this was entirely their fault, as it had to do with the difficulty of finding parking nearby. However, I would only go with a flat-rate moving business in the future. Last time we moved, we used Movers Not Shakers, based in Brooklyn. And the fee was exactly what they said it would be. And they did a good job over all.

We used Oz to move a month ago. Fast, hard workers, nice guys, overall a great job & I would recommend them. I would however recommend packing any artwork yourself, as they seemed not too concerned about protecting it, etc. Of the art that they packedthe glass broke on one frame & a couple others got some scrapes on the frames. Other than that though, they were great. & they came in under estimate!

From the comments above, I will stick with Rainbow Movers. They moved me from my storage locker in Brooklyn to my fifth floor walk up in the West Village in under 3 hours... And I had a ton of stuff!
I had them recommended by friends... And here on A.T.

(can i mention it was hot as hell and the guys were sweating like crazy. these fella's sworked hard)
i moved my artwork and really fragile things myself w/ a car owning friend.
I packed everything on my own.
nothing was broken except i did have a scratch on the wall of the new place but not a biggie as i have a long vintage couch.
they were not the cheapest but it was the best money i ever spent. i was all rested to start unpacking right away.

DISASTER! Okay, so I've used Oz before to move locally in the city. I got a hardworking crew and, wanting to save some money, I did the packing myself. The move was fine so I decided on using them again. This time, I moved from NY to Mass. Since my mother has passed away, I had several antique & sentimental items from her. The person on the phone said I was getting a VIP Crew that specialized in moving antiques. After spending a substantial amount on the move, I later found out that was just "talk" and there actually is no such thing as a VIP Crew. They totally lied! I had decided to let Oz do some of the packing. BIG MISTAKE!!! After I explained to the crew that I had an antique French chandelier from my mother, that needed to be packed separately, one of the guys packed it with a heavy microwave. The microwave obviously crushed it. One of the men also packed a Limoges charger with a brass lamp. The lamp crushed the charger. My armoire is damaged. There are nicks in several pieces of furniture. The lesson learned: IF YOU HAVE VALUABLE ITEMS DO NOT USE OZ. Since the move, communicating with them has been a nightmare. I also still canât get over how dishonest they were. Why would you assure someone that you are sending a VIP crew who specializes in antiques when that kind of crew doesnât exist. Not to mention, I think anyone with half a brain would know that you donât pack very fragile items with extremely heavy ones. What a NIGHTMARE!

A disaster! One block move at flat rate. They could not get things out the apartment that there was never trouble getting into it. They damaged furniture, scraped newly finished floors and every time we complained we were told that moving is hard work and accidents happen. They never properly protected large furniture pieces with blankets so a dresser was gouged. One guy walked onto our newly painted and plastered wall and gouged it, Neighbors complained they blocked the halls and that the foul language used by some crew members was appalling. We actually had to have the legs sawed off one piece of furniture because they couldn't manage to get it into the apartment and threatened to leave it in the hall. I reiterate this was a one block move. We were told it was such an easy move that they didn't need the truck but they wound up using it without ensuring the security of the furniture. Call it a wrecking crew rather than a moving crew.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!
We recently moved from Queens to the East side with Oz Moving. The initial walk through with the salesman was pleasant and built up a lot of confidence. Then once the movers arrived we still felt confident.
However, after about 3 hours of them packing our furniture (and after we gave them tons of good food and drink) they started acting completely unprofessional. It started out as an overall attitude, but it turned into much more. This long and drawn out nightmare of a move has too many details for here, but for your sake, I will bullet point a few of the occurrences. All of this was from one bedroom apartment to another. Not a big move!
-They underestimated how much furniture we have--and therefore did not send enough movers. This made the move last until 1030PM!!!!!They started at 9:00AM!!!!
-They scratched and ruined several of our most valuable pieces of furniture (to their credit they have a great carpenter who fixes the damage--but there shouldn't be such damage in the first place)
-During the move, there was constant misconduct. So much, that the building told us that if they have one more problem with the company they will not let them move into the building again.
-I caught one of the movers cutting side jobs with one of our neighbors!!! No joke, he was in a neighbors apartment helping the neighbor with something while he was supposed to be moving our stuff!!
-The things that we packed on our own came back okay, EVERY ARTICLE that they packed came back with a defect.
-Towards the end of the move, when it came time to pay--at 10:30PM!!!, the movers started laughing at us to our faces in our living room.
-Worst for last--We moved in the summer, and went away right after we moved for a month. When we returned, we realized that after this horrible move, our winter coats never arrived at our apartment (we had them pack and deliver all of our winter coats). I right away called the "customer relations" lady Nancy (who in general has a chip on her shoulder), and she gave me a vague--"I'll look into it" answer. In the mean time I made sure with my old super that it wasn't accidentally left behind at the old apartment--it wasn't.
I didn't hear back from the "customer relations" lady for a week. Called her up, she barely remembered the case and said it isn't relevant if it's a month later but that I could fill out a claim. I filled out ANOTHER claim. When I called to ask about the claim, she started accusing me of lying, and saying that I am just trying to get money from them, and that I cannot prove anything.
I told her if she wants to know about the misconduct she can ask the building management. Then, she starts yelling at me that I am trying to bribe/blackmail her and how dare I threaten her. I was in complete disbelief!!! I had to then calm her down, instead of her calming down the customer.
My experience with Oz storage is not over, because they still have not agreed to help even try to locate my winter coats, and have said that none of my insurance will cover the items THEY LOST!
Oz Storage is one of the worst customer relations experience I've had and by for one of the most unprofessional companies I've ever dealt with. I do not like writing reviews, and I really don't have time for this, but for your sake--stay away from the OZ!!!! I wish someone would have told me.
PS-Small claims court and internet reviews--here we come!!!

Oz came highly recommended by my roommate, my boyfriend, and a couple of other people I know.
I would NEVER use them again.
They arrived an hour late. No phone call, nothing.
The forman Peter came in smelling of booze and cigarettes. Clearly he'd had a late night. He was a mumbler and had the social skills of a rock. The three year old kid that lives upstairs from me has better communication skills.
I asked them to use the moving boxes I had purchased before the move before they started using their own. They completely ignored this request.
I was moving the day before my roommate and so the entire apartment wasn't being moved. Even though the my things were organized into one area of my apartment they continued to ignore me and tried to take everything.
I became very concerned when Peter carried a piece of furniture out by it's legs.
There was no concern for the wooden floors in my apartment. Furniture was pushed and scooted and moved without help. There were a number of scratches when they were finished.
I have an expensive armoire with interior drawers. The drawers were removed and thrown into a box. They were not wrapped.
But as always you must leave the best for last. They finished removing my things and Peter told me they'd be leaving in just a few minutes. I helped my roommate move some things around and looked out the window to see if they were gone and I saw this: One of the movers was pissing on the street. And Peter the forman was drinking a beer.
I called to report the behavior as soon as I saw it and was told that I could call and make a complaint the next day and that the dispatcher would be called about the drinking. What the dispatcher being called ended up being was that Peter was called and told that I'd seen him drinking. He then confronted me in my apartment and told me that if I had a problem with his drinking I should have called the cops. I wish I had now, considering he was driving the truck.
The move was on Sunday. I called on Monday to register a complaint. I've been dealing with Nancy. A customer relations expert she is not. She refused to accept that anything I said was factual. She assured me Peter was an upstanding employee and would have never been drinking on the job. This conversation was before I started unpacking things. On Tuesday I discovered and entire box of stemware that was broken. A marble column that was double wrapped in bubble wrap was broken. There was more.
I finally did get a check for part of the damages, but there was no apology. I would never use them again and with all the other moving companies in the city finding someone else should not be a problem.
