2004_9_13_chair.jpgWe keep hearing about Design & Comfort, but we have never bought anything there. Like many other furniture stores that cater only to New Yorkers, it has a little bit for everyone with a distinctively contemporary style that is easy on the eye, but edgeless in all directions. Of note, however, they specialize in furniture that will fit into smaller spaces, as well as furniture that does double duty, hiding storage underneath or expanding to become bigger.

2004_9_13_moving sofa.gifInterestingly, it is very hard to find a review of the store anywhere. New York Mag has none and City Search only has one bad thing to say (see below).

2004_9_13_sofa.jpgDesign & Comfort carries a large selection of contemporary furniture from around the world. This includes beds, tables, chairs, lighting, sofas, sectionals and wall units for storage. We hear that the prices are good and we like that they sell the moveable Hydra Table (which we have used with clients). With a style somewhere between Bo Concept and Design Within Reach, D & C would make sense as a stop along the way when searching for furniture from these other stores. MGR

2004_9_13_wall.jpgWe bought a glass table a year ago. We realized that it had a bubble in the glass and reported it the morning after it was delivered. After a year of calling and talking to two different managers and finally to the person in charge of orders (Karina) they agreed to replace the top but we had to pay for the delivery. The table had full guarantee for a year, we didn't think correct to pay for a delivery of a replacement when we had reported the problem in time. The company's answer was that we couldn't expect them to work for nothing!! DR Castro

Does anyone know who makes that wall bed? It is exactly what I've been waiting for, a sofa-to-real bed conversion, that flips out lengthwise.

I have that bed, which I bought from D&C in Soho (which I believe is closed now. I thought the sales staff were helpful but smarmy, but decided the utility of the bed exceeded the concern over these issues.

The bed is made by an Italian company, sorry don't know the name, and was $5000. Ouch. That said, the bed is GREAT. I have a studio apartment which is really a 'crash pad' and this works perfectly for my purposes.

not a lot of great help at the store, lots of chairs seen online not carried in the store at all times, and a LOT of leather...and not in a remotely good way. not to mention the kind of brushed metal and glass furniture that was cutting edge on "melrose place." just. say. no.

I bought a Barcelona-esque leather sofa with ottoman from D&C two years ago that looks great and is very comfortable. My husband and I have been very happy with it. Also looked at the Italian murphy bed. Loved it, but thought it was too much especially with delivery and installation. So we bought a murphy bed from Bedderway.com. Bedderway makes the beds to order then delivers and installs. I think they're in Indianna. The cost is much much less and the beds very sturdy and functional.

The Italian murphy bed is by Clei. http://www.clei.it/

I hate how coutch beds feel, they are so uncomfortable with all those bars. Does your beds have the flat foundation under the mattress? Can you put a swedish mattress in place of a regular mattress there?
How much is it and the shipping to orange county, ca?
And does it come already assembled?

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE customer service. These guys had the audacity to continue to give the runaround when asked questions about a delivery that was running late. Three times in a row with the same response ("Sorry, the computer systems are down").
When I finally decided that I wanted to cancel the order, the response from the owner/manager was "Sure, no problem". It was as if they had no interest in keeping the business at all.
There is another place right around the corner that I would recommend one hundred times over Design and Comfort.

DESIGN & COMFORT NEVER USES THE LINE "OUR SYSTEM IS DOWN" IF YOU ARE GOING TO POST UP COMMENTS ATLEAST MAKE SURE THAT IT IS THE TRUTH.

Here's the short of it: bought a wall system in early Jan and put down a deposit. After multiple delays and broken promises, had it delivered in Jul. Had to send it back because of damaged/broken pieces. Re-delivered in late Aug: they couldn't put it together. Refused to accept and asked for a refund. Two months later still waiting for my deposit (10 months since purchase date!!!) to be refunded.

Bottom line: STAY AWAY. DISHONEST SALESPEOPLE. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. FRAUDULENT PRACTICES!!!

Now I am nervous. I purchased an expensive couch in September. I was told it would be delivered in December...Dec. 1st. I have called 4 times. The store has signs all over it now that it is moving. I was told by the sales man...the manager, that I could borrow a couch until then. When I called back about it no one knew anything about it. I am still waiting for the couch and I was told the same thing! The computers are down and I agree with another person...there is no interest in customer service. I felt that I was bothering people by asking for the sofa. They said they would check on Wednesday and that the woman was the only person in the store...two hours later I called and another man answered. I am afraid I have been ripped off. I am waiting still to hear when the couch arrives. I will never deal with the store again. After three messages on a tape recorder no one ever called me back!

To the store person who said the store never says "our systems are down" you are wrong. Yesterday (Monday Dec 4) your salesperson told me "our systems are down" and I can't call the factory to check on the delivery" Her name was Karina. I got little assurance that I was actually going to have the couch after I told her I have had a completely empty room since September. She did say she would contact the company to send me a swatch so that I could by the other furniture! If she can ask for a swatch...why can't I get a delivery date. Christmas holidays are coming up and I have no furniture for my living room! Whoever posted this response needs to check his workers and start following up with orders because when you move to Paramus perhaps it is time to change sales people.WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE STORE AROUND THE CORNER WHICH WAS GOOD WITH CUSTOMERS???

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT shop at Design & Comfort. I purchased a very expensive leather couch from the store in Jan '06 & it was delivered late 6 months later. In addition, the couch was delivered damaged. I called the manager at the store & requested a refund. I was told the delivery company had LOST my couch & therefore I could not get my money back until the couch was located - this is their store policy.

I made numerous phone calls to the manager who was never available & would not return my calls. And the salespeople that answered the phones either were not helpful or were outright rude. After around 3 months had passed, the manager finally promised to give me a refund apparently without locating the couch. I didn't receive the refund when he promised. I continued calling the store to get an update on the refund & just got the runaround. Per my request, I was also promised an e-mail from an employee by the name of Laura that stated that I would get my refund. Not surprisingly, I never received the e-mail because their "computers were down".

It is now a year later & I have yet to get my money back!

I concur w/ vito - The people there are dishonest, customer service is horrendous & they are dealing in fraudulent practices.

1 March 2007 We purchased a glass top table about a year ago and also pre-paid for delivery to our place in Florida. We were assured they deliver to Florida often and it would be no problem. It arrived from Italy into their warehouse late last year, we were told. We tried to get delivery while down there in January, and on our return we were told that at the last minute? the shipper refused the delivery because it was too complicated to assemble. We have been calling almost daily for the past month and they do not respond or call back. I'm willing to work with them, even assemble the table myself but no one responds. Appalling customer service. To be continued...

Wow-we have had nothing but good results and honest dealings with Design & Comfort.

Dealt with Harvey, the manager and Ira the owner. Got our entertainment unit from Park Ave. Got our Dining Set and 6 chairs, Park Ave. Breakfront-ditto; got our coffee table 1/2 off floor model when Soho closed; ordered a special piece for my LP collection-huge breakfront.

Everything delivered well-cared for correctly.

Granted-we haven't been in in over 18 months-so I don't know what has changed and now I heard they are moving.

I even dealt with Signature Leather for a Natuzzi Couch and Chair and did well with it.

All told we probably have spent $8-9,000 with them and never had a major problem.

Sorry to hear of such issues.
