My Great Outdoors: Elenamc's Garden Rehaul

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Elenamc
Location: Bellport, New York
Type of space: Deck & Garden
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: We live in a summer home kind of beach town so when summer comes, ironically, you are really not home but instead at the beach, sailing, or lounging at our neighbors secluded pool etc. It was easy to ignore our own outdoor space because we were always at the beach, then hitting the pool after. When we rescued our second dog and my friends kids all became of age to run around, I decided to clean out, spruce up and have an entertaining area as beautiful as my gardens that I worked so hard on!

...Now the schnauzers are happy with more space to play, our friends kids can visit without bug bites and the baby bunnies once in the ivy, have moved under the cottage and arbor so I believe, they too are comfy! In fact, we are even hosting a Fresh Air Fund child or two this summer — you should too!

How did you create it? The bones to 12 different gardens were here when we bought our beachtown home. I tackled every garden, one by one, planted my favorites and then realized our outdoor "living" space just wasn't comfy enough to enjoy the garden views. So in one week, I pulled up mucky ivy gardens that reached from our main house, past our little cottage and over to my husbands studio and put down a blue stone patio myself with one neighbor boy helping me. The Victorian gardens were a little too established and it was quite a chore. In fact, all of our British friends said "leave it overgrown a bit", while my allergies screamed "pull it all out!" I did feel a bit guilty, but the results are so much more livable, better for allergy prone peeps and all our little wildlife buddies have adapted well. Next up, a "northwoods shade garden" for our cottage tenant to remind him of his home on Bainbridge Isle! Wish me luck!

The colorful umbrella is a nice contrast to all the scroll work and graceful arches. Gives it a cute punch.

Seeing the mix of materials in the brick, flagstone and wood deck was reassuring for me. I've been adding to our patio space the past few years using a mix of similar materials I've scavenged from various places. I worried it might look busy, but hopefully it looks as wonderful as yours!
