My Great Outdoors: Micol's Roman Balcony

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Micol Location: Rome, Italy Type of space: Balcony Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: I have a very small apartment in Rome. It is only 45 square meters and I bought it last year. The best feature of the apartment is its spectacular view. It is located in a fantastic neighbourhood very near to the historical center of Roma, in the south. It was a former industrial area, you can see some pipes and a gazometer in some pics. In the same neighbourhood is located the area of the ex general market of Rome, that is now undergoing on restoration with a project of Rem Koolhas. So, the area was perfect for me but, also the balcony had this great view above the Tiber river in Rome.

I have discovered that the river is a natural corridor, and besides the ducks that live under my balcony I have seen every kind of birds going towards the center and towards the sea at south. In my house I don't hear any traffic sounds and it's just like living outside of the city... I love it.
I'm an architect and have done some improvements to the apartment but they the renovation is still in progress. The balcony is very narrow, so until now I have just used a lounge chair (as you can see) and some plants. My intention is to create a little dining area... Perhaps somethig tranformable, as the rest of the house. In the balcony I see the most beautiful sunsets. I hope you like it, it is my personal paradise.

How did you create it? I added the bamboo frame to the glass that separates my balcony from the my neighbours, and planted some bouganvilees, iris, panzee...

Recommended store, site, product or resource? The bamboo lounge chair is from LA CHIAVE in Rome, a store that sells ethnic objects.
