The weekend report. Our roving reporter snooped around the site of the new West Elm on Saturday and submitted the following:
All the merchandise arrived in boxes this weekend at the yet-to-be-opened West Elm on 17th street across from Angel Street Thrift Shop. The workmen say the grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 4th.
Also opening in the next few weeks on the same block is the Rubin Museum of Art -- the new Tibetan/Himalayan arts museum.
My contact at Angel Street, Patrick McKeon, says they're looking forward to both events. Good for traffic. Apparently, people on the block were invited to take a tour of the museum last week, and Patrick says it's first rate. As usual, Angel Street was impeccable, with gleaming, newly-refinished floors and some classic old garden implements on sale -- notably an old manual, rotary push mower. Useless in the city, but a perfect gift for the mowers in your life. Sadly, by the time we saw it, it was sold.
Booklovers take note, Patrick is stocking up on Himalayan books for the museum opening, and he says Angel Street will be having a cookbook sale in November in preparation for the holidays.
Meanwhile, just up Salvation Armani row, Housing Works was as usual a bit more cluttered and busy, but I noticed they have placed a mac daddy laptop on the counter for customers to make bids on their online auctions. So touching.
Finally, for the record, after a year of looking, my quest for sofa ended. Photos to come.... OHR
The Angel Thrift Shop is my favorite thrift shop in the city. All the merchandise is beautifully edited and displayed. And the prices are quite resonable. I seldom leave the store without some treasure. I enjoy your web site. Thanks.

The Rubin Museum opens this weekend - Oct. 2nd and 3rd - and having a street fair, open to all, to celebrate. There will be (their announcement card) story telling, Scavenger Hunts, Himalayan Dog Pageants (!?)...Was in the museum last week - spectacular - gift shop excellent, cafe and Barney's art deco stair case up through 5 floors of a brilliant Himalayan collection. Also, discounted membership for neighbors.
