We've sent out 9 awards so far. Share a great one from your neighborhood and be the next one.
The Flowerbox Awards began a few years ago to inspire and congratulate urban gardeners who have creatively and lovingly carved out a little green in the big city. This year, with Matt's help, we've gone around and found some great sponsors so we can give gifts to those of you who send us great flowerbox pictures...
How to Enter:
If you see an amazing flowerbox (it could be yours or someone else's), plant the "Flowerbox Award" in the box (the image is down below for you to print out), take two great pictures and send them to us with the following:
• Your name & mailing address (to send you a gift)
• The flowerbox location
• The owner if not yourself (and you know it)
• A short description of why or how it's so nice
The flowerbox can be ANYWHERE in the world and it should be current (no pictures from years ago). We'll choose one a week to post on Friday and send you a gift if we choose yours.
Please email flowerboxes to newyork @ apartmenttherapy.com and put FLOWERBOX in the subject field. Questions? email Matt @ apartmenttherapy.com.

Stupid question... how does one secure the flowerbox to the window ledge? I live on the fourth floor, so if I put up flowers that fall off, there's going to be a real problem...

Another stupid question: aren't they illegal in NYC? I have lived in several buildings where notices went out requiring everyone to remove them for fire reasons (not just the ones on the fire escapes).

and how exactly are you supposed to plant the above image in the box if it's not your own flower box? and why would you need to do so anyways ... it would sort of spoil the effect of a well-designed flowerbox.

wouldn't it be rude to put that awad in someone's flower box if you don't know them? plus, if it's above the 1st floor, it'd be slightly hard. hehe

Maybe I'm being a functional illiterate again, but I don't see when the contest ends! I've got some excellent flower boxes started, but I'd like to wait 'til they've filled in before I photograph them!

Does it have to be a flowerbox? Can it be any sort of planted vessel, such as an urn or even a pot?
Does it have to be flowers? I would like to plant something with sedges and grasses.

Hello All, a few quick answers-
It definitely does not have to be flowers, ChickieLou, and we can be inspired by projects that are just starting out as well as ones that are farther along. Art and Chel's project is just in the beginning stages and it was great to see how they began.
The small gift (I hesitate to call it a prize - it's more like a thank-you) comes from the generosity of EcoForms and SelectSeeds.com. It truly is just a thank you for those that make it to the front blog page. The real prize and the purpose of these features is to inspire each other to try garden projects, and to celebrate the hard work that people have invested in growing something.

But does it actually have to be sitting on a windowsill? (Probably. But I guess that's the point.....)
And when is the end of this contest? Or did I already miss it?

Aulaire -
Doesn't have to actually be sitting on a windowsill! Also I know AT readers LOVE a good competition, but this is a very friendly one. We have enough pots and seeds to hand out 30 awards and will continue this weekly feature as long as the prizes and entries last. That would mean one award per week until December. The odds are pretty good for you to be featured, and have a little gift sent. But the sooner you send in, the more chances you will have!
I have been enjoying the chance to see everyday green in other cities and parts of the world. Thank you everyone for contributing!

JV, I wonder about this too - if you have big enough window ledges they don't need securing, but what about skinny ones? Any suggestions?! Are they really illegal in New York? That's sad, cos they're so cool, I love this contest!
