apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Apartment Therapy Walks the Island (like tourists...)

Hoofer's delight. Yesterday, as we experimented further with getting to know the city and simple delights, we walked from one tip of Manhattan to the other - entirely along Broadway.

Friends joined us along the way, but only one friend met us at the Christopher Street subway at 9am to start the train ride (with coffee and paper) up to 220th Street in Inwood, where we started by looking down from the Broadway Bridge that crosses over into Riverdale.

See the 230 Block Slideshow...

(set timer for 1 second, and hold on. Pictures being added all day)

8 hours later, after lunch in the park, watching the Marathon, the Naked Cowboy and countless conversations that sped the trip through crowded and uncrowded streets, we saw the Statue of Liberty and proclaimed ourselves Done. It was only 6pm.

It is very important to physically get to know your city - all of it - and doing a walk like this is a good start (running the marathon is another!). (Thanks, Annie, Elizabeth, John, Jasie, Oliver, and Sara!) MGR

You may also find a project of (architectural) photographer Elliott Kaufman's to be of interest... go to www.ekaufman.com and follow the links to "Personal Projects" then "Broadway Walk" to read and see how his own journey was tackled/documented.

And I think, no matter where you live, it's great to "see your city like a tourist" (albeit an experienced one) every once in a while.

I hope all involved wore sunscreen. Its important for your long term health and appearance all year long. Even though I rarely put it on unless I know I'm going to be out in the sun long, I know I should. And any young one should wear UV a&b sun glasses as their parents should.

I did a similar walk in late August, going from Battery Park to Broadway Bridge, and taking a photo at more or less every intersection of Broadway. The link is

I unfortunately restricted myself too much on the picture-taking, and wound up with a couple hundred boring photos of the progress up Broadway, but the whole route does get documented.

I ran it and I encourage you all to give it a try! If you follow the training program (and don't have any serious medical problems), you can get ready in about a year. Really. This was my second and I've only been running 3 years. It's one of those quintessential New York experiences.
