apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

AT NY Party Next Thursday, March 9th!

3-3-party.jpgA little scattered this week getting ready for the contest and other things and we've had a hard time deciding on the right place for our get together next week (apologies that the calendar mistakenly said DWR; that's next month).

We want it to be easy to get to and large enough for an impromptu crowd. We were thinking SoHo Grand (it's a big hotel bar) or the W Union Square (also a fairly large, easy to get to hotel bar). But we're not convinced. If you have a better idea that meets these criteria, please let us know below and we'll decide on Monday.
- Easy to get to & away from
- Large enough for a crowd of 30
- Great interior decor
- Not too snooty

Envy all those who can make it to the various AT parties that are coming up. One of these days....I shall time a trip stateside just so I can join you all!

Here's my pick...APT. http://www.aptwebsite.com/
Its ACTUALLY designed to simulate a chic modern (but not mod) Manhattan apartment with a very sophisticated and friendly staff. Some of the best djs in the world spin in the basement lounge. It feels a bit exclusive (no sign outside so most of the meatpacking crowd miss it altogether). The city's design crowd will respect the choice--trust me! 419 W.13th, ask d*s, she's gotta know.

"A little scattered this week"

That's how you titled your headline.
Your operation is going to hell in a website.
It's likely commercially viable beyond your wildest dreams.

Now it's getting boring and mainstream and commercial.
Originally it was slightly subversive and a highly admirable effort.

If you can come up with a party site, I might attend.....how about the Odeon?

the W hotel is really great in terms of access... i agree with design sponge. while not the most unique or original place to meet up, it's pretty and practical.

Union Square Lounge, below the Coffee Shop is well kept secret.Very sleek with a huge fireplace, great sound system and no door attitude.

posted by Sundance on 2006-03-04 11:29:30

Looking forward to it no matter what location you pick, but Union Square area would be great.

One idea is The Campbell Apartment at Grand Central. I can't say for sure if it's large enough. It certainly looks beautiful and located at a major transportation hub! http://tinyurl.com/3socz

Other than that, I'm sort of leaning toward the W Hotel too. Always been curious and wanted a reason to visit. Been trying to think of other possible locations and coming up empty...

The Campbell Apartment would be great too. Never been there, but I've heard good things.

posted by nora on 2006-03-04 17:14:04

The Campbell Apartment would be perfect. The room is enormous and beautiful. The set up would also be perfect for the group. In addition to a larger bar, there are multiple seating areas with large sofas, arm chairs and ottomans. It's gorgeous, sophisticated and old school charming.

The lobby of the Martime Hotel (click my name) is one of my favorites, cozy and slightly decadent at the same time.

"Your operation is going to hell in a website."

Wow, JMC, please let me buy you a drink and search your soul to find out where all that came from.

These are all great suggestions and the accessibility of a few of them is very enticing. Going to check them all out and post one tomorrow....

Union Square Lounge is hot, i've been there and it is a good choice. Campbell apt's is gorgeous too, but a weird location.

posted by modernist on 2006-03-05 20:49:08

Union Square, pleeease. Campbell Apt is too dark and noisy when crowded.

posted by Cherie on 2006-03-05 21:53:26

I don't think Campbell apt appropriate because it really is a place for suits which you would expect given that it is in Grand Central Station (think commuters getting a few drinks in before catching their 9:10 back to wherever - and I am not disparaing commuters or wherever - I am simply saying it is hardly a lounge type place). I agree with Cherie, let's stick to Union Sq.

posted by jamie pup on 2006-03-05 22:20:17

And doesn't the Campbell Apt. turn away people wearing sneakers and/or jeans? (Even super fly jeans and sneaks?)

posted by Jocelyn on 2006-03-06 11:25:42

How about "Under the Volcano" on East 36th between 5th and Madison? Plenty of room for everyone, gorgeous interior... Mexican theme.

Did I miss the announcement of where the party's going to be?

Not yet - we are still arguing amongst ourselves

posted by jamie pup on 2006-03-07 11:55:21

Well, now we've been directed to come here to RSVP so count me in, I'll be there with bells on. Figurative bells.

posted by Ruth on 2006-03-07 14:19:03

I work mid-town. I would love to attend if it was somewhere closer to mid-town, but 14th and 14th streets are a hike for me. Not all of us work downtown.

I'll check back. I do agree that the Campbell Apartment is perhaps a bit too "suity" for the occasion. Wouldn't we all want to relax and just be ourselves?

Under the Volcano sounds good. And, yeah, what's up with jmc?

posted by jmarieb on 2006-03-07 14:22:27

Is this the right thread to RSVP? I plan to be there.

I was going to wear figurative bells!! Damn you woman!

Even so, I'm there.

I'll be there with my wife. I've finally persuaded here that meeting ppl from the internet does not have to be weird or scary (but she still thinks I'm a bit weird anyway). I think pointing out Maxwell to her on mission organization helped.

I wonder if she'll agree to call me jamie pup all night. Otherwise it could get very confusing for me.

posted by jamie pup on 2006-03-07 14:53:00

Actually this is going to a difficult one for me.
Am I ready to admit to my wife that I call myself jamie pup here?

Yay! This is shaping up into a great group!!

Still hope to hear from anne, pphillipp, luigi, lori 2...

We'll call you anything you want, jc, if it means meeting your wife finally!

Oops, left Fiona off the list of people we want to see!!

God, I wish this were tonight. I soooo need the diversion tonight...

I have been to Coffee Shop a million times and had no idea there was an underground lounge...

P2:

Can I admit I don't take subways? How awful!!! I'm a commuter for goodness sake - Grand Central from Westchester and then a nice walk.

Someone promise to point me toward Grand Central upon leaving and I'll be there. Not much of a party gal but I'd love to meet this crowd. Ok, consider my arm twisted! I'm there!

posted by jmarieb on 2006-03-07 16:05:46

Union Square it is! Next year, how about APT?

posted by latillin on 2006-03-07 16:10:27

When you say the Union Square Lounge is "just below Coffee Shop", do you mean literally? Is in on a basement level? What's the actual address? Thanks.

posted by Phyllis on 2006-03-07 16:12:57

I second Phyllis' request for address info. Highly important I don't end up in the wrong place alone, like maybe Pennsylvania or something. Taking a subway will be stressful enough. (Ok, so I don't take subways....so?)

posted by jmarieb on 2006-03-07 16:20:57

jmarieb. One stop. Seriously. One stop on the 4 and you've whipped up from Union Sq. to Grand Central. You know you're going to be ragged unrelentingly if you don't come one stop.

posted by Ruth on 2006-03-07 16:46:48

For those of you who came to this link directly and didn't click from the main AT Parties link this afternoon (which lists all the parties in several cities) the New York party is scheduled for Thursday, March 9th from 7-9PM at Union Square Lounge, 27 Union Sq. (between 15th and 16th). And yes this is apparently the correct place to RSVP for the NY gathering.

See you....but someone (PLEASE HELP!) has to help find me a crew of roofers & plasterers & painters & plumbers & electricians willing to leave NYC for a couple of weekends and earn some cash (my budget is LOW) in the countryside of Pennsylvania so I can get my next residence in order and stop paying outrageous storage fees. Will bring pictures! Need ideas!

I'm going to be at the AD show. If someone else here is going to be at the Pier at closing then let's go to the party together. I'll mention it on OT as well.

Can we have name tags, Maxwell? Pretty please!
