Bamboozled: Crate & Barrel Goes Bamboo Too

img_083105_bedroom.jpg
Looks like bamboo is getting ready for its closeup. Crate and Barrel introduced a new line of bamboo furniture last month. Uninspiringly dubbed "Bento," the bamboo line is "eco-friendly," affordable and has a much tougher finish than regular wood. C&B says:

Layered and pressed into solid planks, bamboo is harder than hardwood and less affected by changes in temperature and humidity.

Despite a slightly dated look to some of the furniture, we like the general concept and are eager to find out how this more luxe bamboo fares in the years ahead. The Zen bed is $999, the nightstand is $429 and the six-drawer dresser is $1500.

Is it me, or is almost $500 per nightstand a little out of whack? Do two nightstands really equal one bed? C&B has always priced their nightstands really high, and I don't know why. I think Room & Board has one that is just over $600!! That's crazy.

Believe it or not, drawers add an incredible amount to the cost of furniture. Add to that an increase in the number of corners (joinery = cost), more exposed surfaces requiring higher grade wood/veneers, and it start to makes sense.

STARTS to make sense. :)

The ZEN bed is metal/steel and not bamboo.

They're going to get the bamboo bed in February 2006.
