(Deadline is Friday, February 10th! Bring it on. Every submission recieves a confirmation, so if you submitted and haven't received one yet, send us an email asap.)
Editor's Note: San Fancisco shall henceforth always be referred to as San Francisco. ;-)
Dear Readers,
Ever since September, when we put out a survey to see which city we should TRY to launch AT in next, we have been looking hard at San Francisco and Chicago as they both tied for first place. In the end we decided, heck, why not go for two.
So this challenge now lies before us:
- Find two awesome editors by March 1
- Launch two new awesome sites by April 1
We would very much like to find a blogger from within our ranks, so although we are looking for likely candidates in other places, we are putting out the word here with the hopes that one of you will fit this shoe. If you are interested, read on below.
We are looking for: smart, nosy, writers with a great design eye and knowledge of where to find things in your city. It is a half-time job (8-10 posts a day), and we like it if you have a life outside of blogging, which involves you with interior design in some way. We like enthusiasts. We like generous people. We think of this as like a radio show: it is about collecting great home resources, hosting the local design community and bringing people together. It is not all about you, you, you. And, yes, we do pay our writers.
You need:
- at least four hours a day
- a good computer
- a reliable high speed connection
- a digital camera
- a good knowledge of how to use all these things
AT's Mission: constantly helping people to have beautiful, organized, healthy homes, through blogging resources (like Zagat's), reviewing products (like CNET.com), tracking the news (like CNN) and providing inspiration (through sharing house tours and design ideas).
Please submit to editor@apartmenttherapy.com with "SUBMISSIONS" in big letters in the subject header:
- Your name
- Where you live
- How the AT in your city would be different from NY and LA
- 3 people you would like to interview
- How did you find AT?
- How familiar are you with blogging?
- 3 sample posts (a. one hot local shop b. one hot product c. one house tour with 10 pics - keep them 100-200 words max)
Thanks, and good luck!

woo hoo! i love SF, but i live in Chicago right now so I'm very happy that we're getting a site as well.
I am thrilled!
Hooray for Chicago!
(and SF, of course)
Thanks AT
I like San Francisco and Chicago, but am bummed now that I live in neither!
here in DC...design advice-less... :(
Yay squared for AT Chicago!
we generally don't say "san fran," but hey... bring it on :-)
Chicago is a beautiful city with great apartments - it is often overlooked. I'm happy for you Chicago!
I am so happy to be getting AT in Chicago...it is a city that is full of great design. I have livd in Chicago area my entire life and would love to be a blogger, but I travel too much and don't have the time. Good luck to some other lucky person!!
what about Boston? we are sad here without AT.... :(
I second Boston!
Hey, I think adding Chicago to your roster is a great idea. I have lived in both Chi & NYC and whereas they are different in so many ways, they are both world class cities with world class people and style!!
I am looking forward to your arrival!!
This New Yorker will definitely check out the Chicago site. I go there every chance I get. Last November we had a sublime dinner at Charlie Trotter's.
Way to go Chicago. Represent!!! I'm from Chicago, but live in New York. I think Chicago can be well represented!
Hooray for ATSF! (I'm in LA but I work in the Bay Area so often that I rent a room in a house up there)
- Tania :)
how about no where? too much AT can make your palms hairy....
your mama's house
I vote for Chicago ... love the Windy City :-)

Wende! Wende! Wende!
DC needs apartment therapy! A Barney's has opened, but that's not enough. Please send help!
JP
I wish I could be your Chicago-based blogger but since I can't access the site from work anymore, it would have to be the AT at Night version. I would love to contribute though! My weekends are usually spent doing AT-like things.
Enrique, you have just flattered me into a state of euphoria.
Honestly, I'm not sure that I'm even potentially qualified enough to apply -- there are lots of people here who are more sophisticated about design. That's not a hint to flatter more! I'm going to look seriously at the application requirements and see if even that much is something I can tackle.
Just to echo a few other folks here:
BOSTON NEEDS AT. MAYBE NOT TODAY, BUT SOMEDAY.
I can't wait for Chicago house tours!
I have to say though I still don't quite love the idea of the different city sites. I want to be able to get ideas from all the sites as I really think that they are all interesting regardless of your city, with the possible exception of brick and mortar store reviews. I wish there was one major AT site with all the posts from each of the city specific sites. Maybe there could at least be an RSS feed that one could subscribe to that would get you all the posts and delete any duplicates from the city specific sites.
alternative reality,
Where did Barney's open? I am so woefully behind! (clearly, I'd never be a candidate to run a DC blog!)
What about a PacNW version covering Portland and Seattle?
Dear Christine:
The Barney's just opened. It is on Wisconsin Avenue, just beyond Mazza Gallery/Friendship Heights. They also seem to be building some sort of Tiffany's superstore next to it, to replace the smaller Tiffany's that is already there. Would we call this a Big Blue Box store? In any event, I haven't yet been to Barney's...I need to go sometime when I feel thin and rich, so I don't think I'll get there anytime soon.
JP
JP,
HA! I should've guessed it was in Friendship heights! Thanks for the tips. Never know when you need something really expensive. :)
Yeah, your requirements for what the next editor of Apartment Therapy in either Chicago or San Fran is absolutely stupid. Do you really put forth that much time into this website?
I'll admit, at first I thought "Hey that's kinda cool. Maybe Chicago will have their own Apartment Therapy blog," and yes, for a split second I thought I could be the editor.
Then I started reading your suggested requirements, which amount to an odd mis-match of needs which no real person can hopefully have. Four hours of time per day to write/blog/take pictures AND have design skills? So, how are you supposed to have a job? You also require free time and a life outside blogging. So, how does that happen again when all your free time is spent blogging/taking pics?
Dear Max,
How do you live?
Love, Matt
Actually I can imagine a few of my friends being able to do something like this and meeting the requirements, if only they lived in SF or Chicago. One is a designer who had a baby and wants something to do for a few hours a day to keep her hand in her favored industry. The other is a student who is also looking to do something on the other side of work.
My point being is I think there are people out there who would jump at doing this and be a good match for apartmenttherapy. Meanwhile, I'll keep my ears to the ground for potential candidates. Looking forward to seeing apartmenttherapy.com spread it's love to other cities!
Here's my guess at the ideal AT regional editor: youngish, passionate about design 24/7, somewhat under-employed and frustrated about it, looking for a platform for building contacts/reputation in the industry, grateful to get an established readership instead of having to build one from scratch. For that person, it would be a gem of a part-time job -- the kind of opportunity you gush about in your autobiography when you're 60 and as iconic as Billy Baldwin or (more appropriately out here) John Dickinson.
Whoever is chosen for San Francisco, I will bake them really exotic cookies out of gratitude for their hard work.
Make sure that those cookies don't contain ingredients that would diminish their ability to concentrate on the blog!
No, not that kind of cookie!
BTW, Curtis -- thanks for the link to the carpenter's level jewelry. While the entire workboot and construction t-shirt look would be a bit much on me (I'm 5'11" and broad-shouldered -- gawd only knows what gender(s) onlookers would assume I might be and what they'd offer to do about it), I am soooo tempted to squeeze the necklace into the ol' budget and wear it quietly with a conservative suit.
One need not take the DNA of that piece to the logical conclusion like I was suggesting.
My architect boss has what I think of as a Mary Richards meets Jackie O chic boucle' Chanel suit look and it looks very smart on her.
Do it. Live it. Be it.
I think I'd *asked* for the logical conclusion -- I'm just not gutsy enough to try it!
If I ever get something published with a character in full "Oops I'm an apartment!" regalia, there will be a polite credit to the originator of the idea. Of course, it'll look like I'm name-dropping when readers realize it's The Curtis.
If Wende applies, can I be her lovely assistant?647403
Oh, how sad I am to be in the PacNW instead of my native Chicago! Maybe an AT for Seattle/Portland next year??!?
YAY! i am really looking forward to the SF site!
I noticed a few votes for BOSTON. Check out my Boston based design blog, decor8 - just launched and ready to take on the city until AT rolls in... :)

I think it's terrific that you're expanding.
Just a word to the wise, though. San Franciscans do not abbreviate the name of their city. Ever. One does not call it "San Fran" and one does not ever call it "Frisco."
Just passing it on. Good luck with the new cities! When you coming to DC?
