apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Chicago Party Proposal

2-27-chicago.jpgSince we're organizing get togethers in NY and LA next week AND actively working on a Chicago launch, we thought we'd see if we could entice a group of readers in that fair city to form their own meetup (drinks on us).

How many of you live in Chicago and would like to get together next Thursday, March 9th? How many of you would bring their cameras and help us blog the event?

Call it a kooky idea or what you will, but we're throwing the invitation out there, and using this post as an open thread for Chicago AT'ers to discuss among themselves. If you build it, we'll buy the drinks and blog it.

Absolutely! I'd love to attend, take pics, and can help organize, if need be.

Sounds great. I would definitely be interested.

Dang!
Too short a notice to get off work AND get a cheap airfare from San Francisco. How about planning a get together in San Francisco?

Janel,
I know that previous AT events in NYC have been held "after hours" at certain stores (i.e., DWR, Built...). I'm thinking that we're probably looking for a bar in this case - maybe a place that isn't too loud?
To get the ball rolling I would suggest a place near me called the Lenox Lounge or maybe Barleycorn which is (somewhat) closer to you?
Thoughts?

Ill be there! There is a Domino event at CB2 on North Ave that night as well if some of you want to hit up two parties!

posted by erika on 2006-02-27 21:47:47

Erika: I'm pretty sure the domino/cb2 event is this Thursday (3/2), and the AT party is next Thurs (3/9)...even better, two parties, two weeks.

Kathryn: Not too loud sounds great, we want to be able to chat. I'm always willing to travel, location doesn't matter that much...if you like the Lenox Lounge, that's a good start.
We can get a consensus of where would work for most of us. Maybe even downtown (always kind of fun & glamorous)? I'm up for wherever works for the majority.

Janel,
I'd be happy to continue the discussion and help plan this. Unfortunately, I can't access AT from work, but email me at
A place I really like downtown is Fulton Lounge - which should be on the quiet side before 9PM.

Hey All,

I'd love to help out in anyway I can. I know some folks at Design Within Reach here in Chicago and would have no problem asking them for space. Not to mention, I'm a Photographer and I'd love to help shoot the gathering.

Here's the catch: I'll be shooting in Paris next week so would anyone mind the following week? Say March 15th, 16th or possibly even the 18th for those people with restrictive schedules? Just a thought.

Otherwise, I'll just have to catch the next one.
-sigh-

P.S.,
I have a couple of other suggestions for places if you're interested.

Kathryn,

If you're considering Fulton Lounge then I'd suggest Victor Hotel over Fulton. (It's only 1 block away.) The decorators went crazy and packed the place with designer furniture. Nelson, Noguchi, Eames, Le Corbusier, Starck... they're all there. Plus you can actually sit in the chairs and hang out.

Just my 2 cents.

posted by AdonisSJ on 2006-02-27 22:42:35

Yeah, I've been to the Victor Hotel. It's very cool, but I got the impression you could only sit down if you had bottle service. Is that not the case?

posted by Kathryn on 2006-02-27 22:47:19

Nah, that's only on Friday and Saturday nights AND only in the large rooms. I went there with a client around 7:00 on a Thursday and we had the whole place to ourselves until about 8:45.

BTW, I like what you did with that Ikea PAX sliding door. Would you mind answering a couple of questions off-line?

Certainly! email me at kw at liquidpoint dot com.

I am next to Wrigley, but downtown works for me. It would be great to get a little after hours tour of DWR though if Adonis could set us up.

It is great to see so many Chicago folks de-lurking in response to this.

posted by Jeremy on 2006-02-27 23:42:41

Just a thought. What about somewhere like Websters Wine Bar? You can rent out the top floor for large groups I think. I have been there with my wife's firm and it is a nice space for a group gathering.

posted by Jeremy on 2006-02-27 23:45:41

Janel you are totaly right on the dates there. Oops! This makes it even better!

posted by Erika on 2006-02-28 00:45:05

count me in, chicago. sounds like similar taste/interest in design does not necessarily equal similar taste in bars for AT readers! the numbers may dictate where the group gathers, but the Webster Wine bar suggestion is a good one (centrally located, not too loud, good wine, etc.). even without renting out the top floor there's lots of room.

i've also got a small posse who will likely join me, they're just not big on internet posting...but they do like to talk.

i have a gazillion other bar suggestions up my sleeve if we want to keep throwing them out.

Good morning Chicago!
Webster Wine Bar does sound good if we are going the bar route.
I'll email Kathryn and see what she thinks...

Chicago lurker here. I'd love to attend.

posted by Marissa on 2006-02-28 09:47:44

Just heard from Kathryn via email.
She thinks Webster's Wine Bar is a good suggestion, and mentioned the available parking at the movie theater for the drivers out there.

Should we start thinking about a time to gather?

posted by Janel on 2006-02-28 09:56:03

Wow. you chicago readers are off to a quick start. that is great. I would suggest 7-9, as that is the time we are all meeting and a time that is generally good for the afterwork/before dinner transition and allows some people to come early and go while some stay and find dinner together.

If Webster's Wine Bar is a good central location, i also would go for that over DWR because the loung atmosphere is much easier for gathering and talking. Keep the thread going and I'll give Websters a call to make sure that they have some free drinks waiting for you all.

posted by jennifer on 2006-02-28 17:19:40

The Victor is a great suggestion, especially with its emphasis on style and sophistication. The Webster Wine Bar is nice, but provides a rather ordinary environment.

posted by Liz on 2006-02-28 18:54:55

Yet another lurker here... based on Maxwell's post I was under the impression that Webster Wine Bar was a done deal, and it sounds like he's already done some leg work to set it up. It seems like this will be the first of many such meetings, so there will be plenty of opportunities to check out other places.
