apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Dark Water: Roosevelt Island Can't Get No Respect

2005_13_dark.jpgSome apartments need a therapist, others need an exorcist. We've been perusing reviews for the newly-released real estate horror flic Dark Water, and Jennifer Connolly's crib belongs in the latter category. You may never travel to the Little Apple again.

Alright, we'll say it, there are times when decluttering doesn't fully solve the problem.

The film is directed by Walter "Motorcylce Diaries" Salles, a Brazilian, and is based on a short story by Japanese author Koji "The Ring" Suzuki, and stars Brooklyn Heights-reared Connolly. Where do these people get off knocking the jewel of the East River? (Quick: what borough does Roosevelt Island belong to?) In any event, move over Amityville.

Bottom line: this film is not for the flower box set, but if you need to work through some issues with your Super and you have a ready supply of anti-depressents, step up. OHR

Brings back memories of the spooky old house I lived in during my college days (hey -the rent was cheap!). On Halloween evening, of all days, two little old guys come knocking at my door to tell me one is running for some local office. All I heard was blah-blah-blah until one turns to the other and says, "Isn't this the house that old man Johnson hanged himself in down in the basement?" Of course, having met Mrs. Johnson (landlady), I can kind of see what drove him to it. All in all, we convinced ourselves that old man Johnson was keeping an eye on the place for us and was an ok guy. :^ )

RI is Queens, no?

AT should sponsor a real-estate related film festival!

Money Pit. Pacific Heights. Housesitter. The Apartment. Apartment Zero.

I hope that Hollywood isn't done with Roosevelt Island yet-- did you read that Talk of the Town piece about the island's pneumatic garbage collection system? Completely groovy but fraught with potential horror. Plus the ghosts that surely reside in the hospital ruins at the tip. The place is teeming with cinematic potential.

RI is part of Manhattan - I lived there for five years in the 80s - mailing address is NY NY - had a great apartment right on the river - spectacular view of the bridge and midtown

Edward wins! RI is indeed a part of Manhattan. Love the idea about the film festival. Might include "Sliding Doors" too. Didn't Gwyneth redo her apartment in that, right after leaving her cheating hubby? Or am I thinking of Bridget Jones. In any event, we'll get right on it.

And add House of Sand and Fog for the final dose of house angst and despair. And Jennifer Connolly.

I lived on Roosevelt Island for many years with my parents before we "escaped" er moved to the Upper West Side. My ailing grandparents still live there. It is a pretty icky place to live when you are young and your friends live anywhere else. I think the setting of this movie is totally right on the money.

I know someone living there who is no grand dad and he likes it. Also has one of the most incredible views from his brand new apartment.

I just moved to Roosevelt Island a few weeks ago. I stumbled onto it one day sightseeing years ago and loved it. It feels like a small town but with views of the Manhattan skyline I never dreamed I could afford. Coincidentally, just after moving here somebody told me that movie, Dark Water, takes place on R.I. I just saw it a few hours ago in the theater-- what a kick! I recognize every outside shot, and I love that I live directly across the street from the characters' building. (The building's interior, including the lobby, was a soundstage. Everything else was genuine on-location scenery. Not sure about the water tower on top of the roof though. Will have to check that out tomorrow in the daylight.) Anyway, I'm early 20's and I don't mind living on the island at all. In fact it's been my goal to move here for some years now, which I've finally accomplished. While it's thrilling to see my new home up on the big screen, I hope it doesn't get publicized too much. The charm of the place is that it IS away from Manhattan and feels like a small town not innundated with tourists and passerbys. It's the kind of place where there is only one flower shop, which may or may not have an actual name (i.e. Ailene's Flower Shop), but can be referred to simply as Flower Shop. We have one pizza place (seen in the movie), one chinese take-out, one Gristedes, one Public Library, one tram, one subway, and a R.I. bus that costs a quarter to ride. Case in point: there was a scene of Jennifer Connelley out on The Street (we have only one, Main St.) with a sign blurred out behind her head. I instantly recognized it as reading: Flower Shop.

So I climbed to the top floor of my building today and checked it out. I guess I'm not *directly* across from the haunted building so it's hard to say, but I'm fairly certain there is no water tower on the roof in real life.
