apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

December is Party Month!

12-5-party.jpgFinally, it's time to break open the good stuff, clean up and invite people over to cook, eat, drink, dance, schmooze and celebrate making it to the end of another big year. Not only are we having a party (Dec. 15th), we know of a number of readers who are having them as well, and we invite you to send in pictures and party ideas for us to post.

We'll kick it off with our holiday correspondent, Billy Mac, who opens tomorrow with four posts devoted to PARTY ARCHITECTURE. And today we also are starting our 2005 UN-GIFT GUIDE designed to make indecisive people's lives easier and to not make folks dependent on shopping for pleasure.

I could have sworn that party was on the 8th! I was counting on coming, but now I might have to rearrange some stuff to make it. So, that's the party I thought I meant that I was going to when I clicked my "attending at least one party" this month.

Because I will be out of town by the time my office party happens (mercifully), and I'll be out of town when this great party in my building happens (unfortunately).

I don't think my cousin's son's wedding reception counts as a party, since there will be people there that I will have to dodge to keep from seeing.

Hosting a bachelorette party/shower for my sister on Friday, work party on Saturday. I'm kinda nervous about having a party at my house.. the place is so unfinished.

This one needs to be multiple choice...

I was born a week before Christmas. It's impossible to get people to come to my own party, so I just glom on to everyone else's party. Last year, I designated my building's holiday party as "my birthday" and invited a handful of friends. After all, I don't want people singing to me or buying me presents anymore. I just want a good excuse to be social.

My building hosts an "open house" of sorts every year - out of eight, four apartments open their doors and invite people over.

It's fun in concept, but I am usually the first one with my door closed after a run-in with some other crazy drunk guest. Like the Brazilian man that tried to beat down my friend (who was speaking Portugese...) for speaking Spanish to him!

I also have my own smaller party at home (with the door closed...) for a few friends.

And we have a holiday party at work, but I am skipping it this year to go to another friend's party which will be much more fun!

Let the champagne flow!

And did anyone see the cover of the paper where you can buy one of those chocolate fountains for just $69?? I seriously considered it!!

I think a chocolate fountain for $69 would be BIG fun if you had space to store it. Or ... if you wanted to pretend you were renting it, use it for a party, and then put it on eBay, if you don't have room for it.

Amber, as long as there's lots of food, a working toilet, and a reasonable ambient temperature, people should be easy-going about unfinishedness. The purpose of a party is to get people together, after all, not to critique the decor.

Committed as I am to obsessiveness about Having a Nice Abode, nonetheless we routinely held parties in our very unfinished home when we lived in Minneapolis and later in upstate NY. If anyone ever thought we were tacky to do so, they kept it to themselves and kept stuffing chow down their cavernous maws.

Agreed on the more-choices. I'm attending a bunch of parties and hosting; the hosting is sort of at home, but not my everyday nyc home.

I'm actually a little excited about my work party - gives boyfriend and I a great excuse to get somewhat dressed up for a great meal and drinks!
