apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

December is Party Month!

12-19-party.jpgThis is the month you get to visit a whole lot of other people's apartments. Speaking of which, have you sent us pics of your apartment party yet?? (email us at editor@apartmenttherapy.com)

We were at an amazing apartment on Saturday night. It was the top floor of a building in Tribeca - about 3,000 square feet - with a staircase up into a glass room that led out onto a Japanese roof garden with views of the city. Best of all, it was a one bedroom apartment. Only in New York do bachelors have pads like this. Stupendous.

Now, as we enter the final week, how does your apartment look? Ours is rapidly filling up with the temporary clutter of presents, boxes and wrapping paper. By the end of the week, we will barely be able to move, but it all gets cleared out in January and right now it feels sort of cozy. Crowded and warm inside. That is December.

Well, I have been in my new apartment for about three weeks and it is really coming together. Still quite a lot to do. I am trying to paint one of my walls red, but I'm having a bit of trouble. I love the color, but it looks kind of splotchy. Any tips - will another coat help?

Also, I have not had time to get a tree and I don't even know where they sell them in my hood (I moved to the Wall street area). I was thinking about getting a fake tree - any ideas on where to get one in NYC?

New Tenant-Were you the poster who asked about how to make the transition for your cat easier? How did that go?

Yes, Pixie, that was me (I?)

Freeway (my kitty) is doing well. What I ended up doing was keeping her in the walk-in closet in my old apartment while the movers were packing up and then taking her down to the new place in a car and putting her in the walk-in closet there before the movers arrived. She had food, water and litter box in the closet. She was still a bit traumatized and hid under the blankets for about a week. But she is starting to adjust now.

Thanks so much for asking!

Email you photos? Come on... that's so ten years ago. How about you ask for a particular tag on flickr, then when people upload their photos using that tag you'll have lots to judge.

New Tenant - We've painted our kitchen red using General Paint. It was a paint formulated for deep reds and had a pre-tinted base. We did 3 coats and it looks pretty even.

Good luck!

NT,

did you use a tinted base or a neutral base (like grey?) also there are some techniques to painting with the heavy colors (like red, brown, dark blue), you don't want to over work an area (max two times over the same spot), try to keep a wet edge, have someone cutting in while someone uses the roller, make sure there's enough paint on the roller, and buy the best possible paint and roller.

after 3 coats i still can see a few splotches in mine, but i'm living with it because many parts of the wall are ok and i don't want to risk the whole wall to fix a few spots!

if you do a google search there are a lot of tips for painting red. also if you go to a good paint store (one that sells benjamin moore for example) they can walk you through the best way to get it even. From what i've seen it's mainly people overworking the roller and rolling when they should put more paint on it.

Thanks Minh. I pretty much broke all the rules you said, but I was just doing a sample section of the wall to see if I liked the color. Now I am going back to paint the entire wall, but I was feeling nervous about it because of the splotchiness. I just painted over the while walls - no base - but I now have a pink base coat. Also, I must not have had enough paint on my roller at certain points and I did work over some areas too much. Thanks for all the tips.
