Today is a special day. It is the last work day before all our collective holidays commence this weekend. While Sunday and Monday will be nice, Friday - in our mind - is the sweetest, as everything quiets down, people leave work early and the possibility of the long weekend stands before us all. Today is the day to take a deep breath and enjoy the season (and thank God the strike's over).
At Apartment Therapy central we are a little jealous of our colleagues over at The Kitchen, because while all of our party planning is cooling down, they are gearing up for cooking, cooking and more cooking in the next few days.
It's not really fair that they get to talk about cooking EVERY day, and we only get to talk about moving the living room furniture around every once in awhile.
At least we have New Year's coming up...
That said, the next two weeks are going to be quieter at AT.com as all three sites take a break and roll out their Best of 2005 posts. Alec in LA will be back after New Year's and we, as well as The Kitchen, will be back on January 9th after Sara Kate and I finish a 10 day silent retreat up in Shelbourne Falls, MA. From the techie world of NYC blogging, that is going to be our vacation, and we can hardly wait.
BUT, never fear. We're going to have a few open threads running so that people can stay in touch with one another and Jill will watching the pot to make sure it doesn't boil over.
But enough talking, there's some great Friday posts to be written. Enjoy!
Awesome photo. Wouldn't it be fun to have those three reindeer in the corner of your living room just staring at your party guests?
At the risk of being mooshy (some risk is healthy) I will say this: There is much to learn at and from AT and it is not all about design and/or food. I love reading posts. I love following links. I love finding deals. People are incredible. Design ideas flow into other topics and voices and inspires us to view life a bit differently, to look at objects and space differently, to share our miserly selves and our extravgant selves, and to see how we all live without anything being invasive. And now The Kitchen brings a forum to all foodies, and encouragement for those who want to advance their palate.
This has been a fun place for me and I am grateful for that. As a true bi-coastal, it just brings my experience together in a very nice and user friendly package.
May all of you have beautiful and joyful holidays, stay safe, and return next year with wonderful stories and ideas.
......and would someone please tell me how to fix a typo once I've sent the silly post....
Apparently I have nothing to do this morning...
Well, off the design subject, I just read the 2005 un-gift post from the favorite posts Maxwell listed. Where was I that day? Did I actually do some work? This was such a good one. I feel like a missed something.
Could we revisit this after the holidays (or now) to see how people managed to suffer through this one? Might be interesting. The posts sure were.
hey - are you guys doing a vipassana course? is it your first one? i did my first 10-day a couple of years ago - challenging and amazing. my husband will be that the same one you're at! (not me, though, as i have a new job and no vacation time yet...) anyhow, it's a wonderful way to ring in the new year! enjoy every minute of those magical ten days, and be happy!
Happy belated birthday jmarieb
Is anybody actually trying to get work done today?
I baked this morning to the calming vibe of an Enrique mix. Planning to enjoy riding mass transit (and bring cookies to my really nice token booth guy) to do a little xmas eve dinner shopping . . .
I'm feeling the christmas.
Happy Holidays and superfine new year to all y'all at AT.
Hi, all! Yes, I'm at work but clearly not getting a lot of work done. There's hardly anyone in today so I've got the Christmas tunes playing in my cubicle and am enjoying the moment. I may be able to get out around 4 tonight which will add some much needed time to my baking and last-minute gift making schedule.
At the risk of sounding mushy, as said before, this site and the people who frequent it are great. You get me through the workday, give me ideas and opinions to ponder, and rev up my creativity - thanks!
Happy holidays and a great new year to everyone!
Thanks Guido!
And Libby, happy you agree. AT is really uplifting and energizing.
I couldn't agree more. Let the mushiness continue... See you all in 2006!

To continue the mush-fest...
AT really has made my year. It has made me laugh, opened wonderful doors, reinforced some ideas I've had about career paths, and, most importantly, has brought great, funny, talented friends into my life.
Does Hallmark make a "to my favoritr blog" card yet?!?
Thanks Maxwell for creating such a great community.
Have a safe, creative, colorful holiday season and new year!
Yet more mush:
I've really enjoyed AT this year, and so I suppose 2006 will be the first entire year I'll spend in it, since it wasn't until Spring of this year that I discovered it.
It's been a really fun bunch of really smart folks with good eyes, and (for the most part) civil tongues in their very smart heads, but always very, very interesting. And uplifting? Yeah! I'll second that.
Seriously, that walk down Broadway (for one thing) was loads and loads of fun.
