apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Dept. of Improvements: New Comments System

3-19-communityad2.jpgCouldn't find it, couldn't buy it, so we built it. Starting tomorrow we're going to be slowly rolling out our new comments system across all seven blogs. It's very, very cool, but necessarily simple in design to start with.

The new system will allow you to register as a user and give you an account, password and personal profile page. You will be able to choose a unique screen name and NEVER, NEVER again will you have to enter the security codes when commenting or voting on a survey...

It will also ensure a much fairer contest environment when it comes to reader voting, as each user will only be allowed to vote once on each survey. This was something of a concern in our last contest.

The Personal Profile pages will be slowly built out over time, allowing you to store and bookmark posts and pictures to your own page, email one another and keep track of all your comments.

As for the name of this page, Personal Profile Page sounds a tad boring, so we're going to take suggestions as to what to call it.

Some ideas so far....

My Room
My Apt.
Personal Style Tray

Oh, also, this new system is still a beta version, so please be patient and let us know if you have any problems. We'll fix them.

PLEASE nothing with "My" in it. We don't want the site overrun with the average denizens of THOSE sites, do we? Not trying to be elitist, but I can see it now:

Liek OMGee! PoTtTeRy BaRn TeEn HaS sOmE FuN nEw ShEeTz! *ROFLCOPTER* *LOLZER*

Personally I'm for "Style Tray" (even though it DOES sound a but femme).
The closet also isn't bad. "Landing Strip" makes me think less-than-clean thoughts.

I like landing strip. Never thought of those connotations.

I understand where you're coming from, but I'm not the "register your profile" type. So, I guess this will be my last post. Of course, I don't post very often and AT will do just fine without me. But the cumulative effect of a bunch of people like me who refuse to register will probably result in fewer overall posts -- which is a tradeoff I'm sure you've considered. Anyway, thanks everything.

I'm new to the Apartment Therapy site (found out about it just this year), but I was instantly addicted when I saw all the cool home tours from the Smallest Coolest Apartment. What a thirst quencher! Your new addition of profile pages will surely keep me coming back! Great work on an amazing website!

i'm not really a register person either, but it will help with different ppl who have the same names. and keeping ideas you like together in one place sounds nice. i dont think it'll slow traffic, i think most ppl will register and like it better.

i like "style tray" or something along the lines of a idea scrapbook...sketch book? notepad? muslin journal? (a place where you keep all your ideas is sort of where i'm going with that) hmm or "our house"?

I love My Apt. It's fitting since it's Apartment Therapy Dot Com.

I love this idea, since I won't have to enter those cumbersome numbers in and it will help me stay organized on here...I'm almost a fixture on this site.

I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't want to go with registration - it only benefits us who "So freely we receive…” I pay a $120 a month for HD cable and get more value out this site than that expenditure. Perhaps this will screen some of the whiners.

How about:

"My 265sqft"
"My Personal 265sqft"
"My 265sqft Profile"

Obviously I am going with something that references the size of the founder's home.

posted by Archie on 2007-03-19 13:45:22

I like it! I don't think as many people will register just to snark and it fosters personal responsibility for what has been said, so it sounds good to me.

How about "Where I Live"?

posted by Lisa from VA on 2007-03-19 14:04:40

I don't understand why people would "refuse" to register. Unless they like having to type their name, email address, and code every time to post something. Being able to keep track of which posts you added comments on sounds cool too. And Lisa from VA has a good point. This way maybe we'll have less jerks acting pretentiously and being malicious towards other readers.

posted by Chin on 2007-03-19 14:12:38

People resist registering because they fear that there will be resulting email that will clutter their inboxes. There is also a concern about collecting personal data online, etc. I registered when this was first brought up a couple of weeks ago, but I must say I probably wouldn't have if I were not already part of the AT Community.

posted by JonathanB on 2007-03-19 14:28:29

Just want to voice my opposition to naming the profile page anything with "my" in it. Myspace, My Yahoo, My Simon, etc., etc.

I'm for calling it Style Tray. Not Personal Style Tray, just Style Tray.

posted by Diane on 2007-03-19 14:39:34

I understand the reasons for creating the site registration but I don't care much for having to register (for the reasons noted above.) The next best thing would be to not 'require' too much personal info (please?) I really try to keep the spam opportunities down.

posted by lisa in austin on 2007-03-19 14:42:18

So those people that are worried about spam being sent to them, are they filling in fake email addresses now every time they post a comment? Because you can't post without putting something in the email address field and theoretically you could be sent spam. You can always set up a spam secondary email account with gmail, yahoo, hotmail or whatever and use it to register with websites and then never check it again if you're worried about spam, since it's not your main email address anyways.

I LOVE the idea of having a place to bookmark posts etc... I spent the weekend with my mom and sister re-organizing/decorating my niece’s room (she turned 1 friday) I found myself saying "oh let me see if i can find a post on apartment therapy where they did ________" but never did find the posts I wanted to show them.. :( I am also excited to see other AT fan 'profiles'

I LIKE the idea of having to register. Getting emails from AT is a small price to pay for getting to have a profile where you can personalize and bookmark stuff that you want to remember. Thanks guys!

i'm quite adverse to signing up/registering for anything online - but since this community has proven itself to be Nice, Helpful, and above all Design Inspirational!... i will be proud to register.

plus, i can organize all my AT links from del.icio.us and house them over here.

yay, 2.0!

posted by miss on 2007-03-19 15:08:25

Jamjaree,

When you register, most websites allow you to check a box saying whether or not you want emails from that site. I'm sure there may be a few dishonest ones who still sell your email address anyways, but I doubt AT would be one of them.

posted by Chin on 2007-03-19 15:16:59

Oh happy day.

My two cents on personal profile: maybe something like "My therapy" or "Personal therapy."

posted by Pixie on 2007-03-19 15:31:11

This is an excellent idea. It'll be interesting to see how it develops. I hope that this change will make it easier to access old articles/threads. I haven't had much luck in the past with trying to hunt down past posts using the current "search the site" function.

As for potential spam, I use a free email account that I opened specifically for things like this, to keep the wolves away from my "real" email.

posted by marm on 2007-03-19 15:39:14

Great idea–my vote is for Style File, since that's really how they are kept, each person's personal inventory of clippings and swatches and more. And not everybody here is in an apartment, but we all seem to love our homes.

I read somewhere that the whole "My" thing is no longer considered hip and is a bit yesterday. Not sure where I read it, but the article was pretty convincing.

I wouldn't go for Style File, since there's already an amazing blogger out there with the blog name www.style-files.com and it could become confusing. Especially since AT slinks to her blog often.

If I could create a name, I'd go with QUICK FIX. It's short, sweet, catchy...

I agree with everything JonathanB says above about registering. I wouldn't have registered if I hadn't been familiar with this site.

Diane:

STYLE TRAY sounds too make-up-y. Could men have a different name for it? Maybe, MAN TRAY?

P.S. I suspect registering won't alleviate ALL the snarky comments.

How about "The Closet"? or "The Pantry"?

posted by opinonated on 2007-03-19 17:52:23

Hey, maybe we could each name our tray/file/apt whatever we want? Because although I don't personally want a MAN TRAY, I think it would be fab if weasel dearest had one! Maxwell, can you give the thing a default name and then give us the ability to change it?

posted by Diane on 2007-03-19 18:08:44

On a related note: I see a problem for those of us who would like to be known by our real names, because I think that at some point in the near future, most of the more common names are going to be taken, possibly by people who register and then are never heard from again, taking the name out of circulation permanently. Maybe registration should automatically expire if the registrant doesn't post for a certain period of time?

posted by Diane on 2007-03-19 18:18:04

For the record, folks, our registration is as simple as we could make it to be effective and any information we get from it will be kept strictly private and you will NOT get emails from doing it. If you want our email, you'll have to sign up for it, as always.

Diane, as far as getting your name goes, we might be able to do that, but in the meantime, feel free to follow this link and sign yourself up

Others who are reading can feel free to sign in as well.

For those of you who don't like registering and giving up your personal information, here's a couple suggestions that have worked well for me.

As already mentioned, you can open an email account solely for commercial/business and registration purposes. Virtually ALL my spam goes to the email address I use for buying airline tickets, shopping, and dumb websites I have to register for in order to use them.

The address I use for AT is yet another email address, the one I use for my own blog and for commenting on blogs. This one is not associated with my real name or address. It does get some spam but very little.

My third address appears nowhere online and is only given out to real live humans. :-)

Oh. Name for our own little personal section...I like "The Closet". Anything with "my" in it is too cutesy. gag

Maxwell,

Thanks--actually, my post was written while crying bitter tears over having signed up within probably half an hour of your "ssshhh . . . " post inviting us to sign up, and my name was already taken! Oh, okay, maybe I wasn't crying, but I AM bitter! Also thinking maybe something went wrong with my registration, because I've never seen another Diane here before and haven't seen her since . . .

HI
I have become quite fond of this community and although I am still debating on signing up - I probably will. I prefer the spontaneity of
people just dropping in and commenting. I probably would not have entered apartmenttherapy initially if I had had to sign in. I probably will sign up because all the regulars are really informative and thoughtful - even the voices of descent... Wish there was a spell check.

posted by Just Me on 2007-03-19 23:30:37

ok I LOVE THIS! i actually emailed you guys about doing this after all that oprah junk.

& btw, if you are worried about personal info, don't. any good nerd will tell you to have more than1 e-mail account. i have one just for when i sign up for things. that way, i don't get any spam in my personal account. & if you're worried about getting a record of your actions online, use a nickname, middlename, or something. but it's not hard to find info about people online even if they never use a computer. i've done it to prove a point to friends before. as for always entering passwords, just save the password w/ your os or browser.

i'm very happy about this b/c i think it will cut down on mean comments & maybe i'll be better known as a regular member.

I'm excited about this new system. Just in time for the next contest!

I would rather call it Profile. Keep it basic so there are no doubts what it is. I know everyone wants to have fun with the nomenclature and all, but it has to fit the mental model of the person using it.

posted by charlene on 2007-03-20 00:30:07

Why not call the personal profile page HOME? Home is a much more complex and inclusive word than style, apartment, or room. This word encompasses not only ideas of the structure and style, but the various emotional qualities that are tied to the places we live. Finding a link between design and wellbeing seems to be what makes apartment therapy such a gem. I also like the idea that each AT site is the name of a city and the personal profile page would be like a place of refuge among the cities.

A profile page shouldn't be called home because home means home page for most things www. To make it mean something else would be a bad practice. I just reread the thread and I like the closet suggestion. I should see if I can get some of my content strategy colleagues to chime in.

I think this is a great thing. Most of us have so much info out in webspace that the little bit of info we'd need to supply AT seems nothing to be concerned with.

I like Style Tray, I do not like anything with Closet in it. It doesn't matter though, just my personal opinion. And....it seems redundant to use anything with My in it because it is, already, ours individually.

So, after reading all the above, does this mean that I stil can keep the name I registered with during the "trial"? I think I received a confirming email, but at this point, I can't remember.

And, what I love most about this, besides the taking responsibility for our comments part, is that now I'll be able to bookmark favorites threads. Many times, and I've done this myself, a subject comes up numerous times within a 30 day period and I think having easier access to past threads, this will be reduced.

I think AT is growing in a really nice way.
