Desperately Seeking a (short) Tag Line....

2005_8_30_at-tagline.jpgWhen you put a lot of great minds together, you sometimes get mush. We are working away at the final touches of redesign but are stumped on a tag line. You know, the line that says what a website or blog is about so people get it instantly. For example,

Curbed: "In New York City, it comes back to real estate, rent and the neighborhoods we inhabit."

Urban Baby: "The Ultimate Parenting Resource"

Gizmodo: "The Gadgets Weblog"

We would really like some help from regular readers, and we'll use what works best. Below we've listed our top picks right now. Take a vote and give us an alternate if you think you've got something better. Thanks! MGR

What's wrong with the line from your "about" page:

"changing the world, one apartment at a time"

It's similar to the second one, but not as flat.

"For apartments that are ready for change."
or "For apartments ready for change." It would kind of sound like anthropomorphizing the apartments, and kind of incorporating that old familiar morsel of common-sense about change. Because let's face it, most apartments are ready for some kind of change.

posted by Curtis on 2005-08-30 16:48:37

I picked "Design Resources for Urban Homes." I thought this one was similar to the others used as examples as being pretty descriptive of what the site does. It's straightforward and succinct.

As for the other two, I don't think this site really "saves" apartments, and it's unclear, if you don't know what the site is about, how the site is "saving" the apartments. Too many interpretations to get the point across. For an uninformed viewer reading the slogan, it might be for born-again Christians. It could be disaster relief. It could be about stopping developers from destroying low-income housing.

"Interior Design for the Rest of Us": who are the readers the "rest" of? It's unclear. It seems like this site is about the interior design of apartments for people into interior design and not some marginal subset as the slogan implies. In general, I think this site caters to a higher-end consumer, which, to me, doesn't really seem to fit the idea of "the rest of us."

My $.02.

Apartment Therapy
For Your Personal Space

posted by JMW on 2005-08-30 17:06:11

I don't like the implications of "for the Rest of Us"... and I think it limits the content you can provide, since it feels like it has financial associations.

Design Resources for Urban Homes -- advice not limited to urban homes; you even had an escape section specifically for non-urban spaces!

Saving Apartments, One at a Time -- I like the suggestion above that slightly alters this one

Interior Design for the Rest of Us -- I agree on the aforementioned criticisms of this one; the Rest of Us are happy with the other design sites too but appreciate this unique addition

I would like something that tied in the "therapy" title. Why "apartment therapy" - what does the word add that "apartment ideas" or "apartment design" does not.
Also: do you really NEED a second line? Why?

I LOVE Stacy's suggestion of "Design Intervention", but it feels like it needs to be elaborated upon to be a true tagline. Perhaps something along the lines of:
Design Intervention for Urban Living;
Design Intervention for Urban Spaces;
Design Intervention for Urban Angst;
Design Intervention for the Masses;
blah blah blah.
(You get the idea.)

posted by Enrique on 2005-08-30 17:32:37

I agree with "a" that it should tie in with "therapy" somehow. Keep to one theme, or else it will sound arbitrary. And jumbled.

posted by Aaron on 2005-08-30 17:38:57

definitely "design intervention" for all the same reasons as above though the full line can be "design intervention for the addicted" or something of the like.

or perhaps hit on something about the addictive nature of this site and those who use it. addicts, addiction, addictive - therapists, therapy, etc.

posted by brooke on 2005-08-30 17:43:04

How about:

"Every apartment needs a little (design) therapy."?

Sort of a variation on one of the tag lines discussed for the AT T-shirts. I'm just not feeling any of the the others you listed for mostly the same reasons already expressed.

"Design Intervention" is likely to soon to be a registered trademark of Jupiter Communications for "ENTERTAINMENT IN THE NATURE OF A HOME IMPROVEMENT TELEVISION SERIES." They need to file a statement of use before it registers.

This isn't legal advice. Just an FYI.

Love the whole design intervention/addiction thing... maybe "self-help for the design addicted", "12+ steps to interior recovery", or something that would give new meaning to being "on the couch" (ooh, so sorry for the pun!).
Maybe I'm complicating things...Stay's "design intervention" was short & sweet.

posted by M L on 2005-08-30 18:36:18

Design Intervention is hilarious, but I don't think it will be funny for the long haul. Curtis's Ready for Change ideas are very good in a more subtle shrinky way, but I have to say I like your original "changing the world, one apartment at a time" even better.

"For the rest of us" resonates with me too -- I love a spin through Met Home and expensive everything as much as the next girl, but it's rarely for something real in my life. AT has a good mix of practical lowbrow good design along with out-of-reach design porn. I notice a high percentage of Ikea and other budget constrained activity here. And I think plenty of people identify as part of a hipster or at least design-intelligent marginal subset. You know...we're "Different."

"changing the world, one apartment at a time"
sounds better and better . . .

posted by guido on 2005-08-30 18:37:29

I agree with Frank and M L.

posted by Joan on 2005-08-30 18:39:14

You should absolutely feel no rush to do this... The tag will stick once you pick it... you'll need something as catchy as "Apartment Therapy."

Have you seen the "Gutter"? That name was inspired by a Herbert Muschamp quote... Maybe you could find a good quote from a source everyone would get a controversial, subversive kick out of.

Does AT have a Manifesto?

No rushing to be like the others!!!

That "Gutter" Muschamp quote drives me crazy!

It's paraphrased from Oscar Wilde,

and used to good end in a Pretenders song, although you don't see Chrissie Hynde attributed.

I totally vote for "Changing the world, one apartment at a time." Something about the word intervention strike me as bossy--and AT never lectures or tells anyone how to live. (Okay, hardly ever.)

I think "changing the world, one apartment at a time" is still the best I've seen so far, though I want more there -- something less canned, more creative??? I wouldn't include "urban" in the tag line because it isn't all inclusive of what you cover.

"changing the world, one apartment at a time"

the best-has a hint of the ecological without defining the site as an ecoblog. It's optimistic without being corny. And it suggests that we can alter our perception of this crazy world through small everyday things we do at home.

yeah, go with this one!

"Saving/Changing the world, one apartment at a time" sounds very similar to the "Designer Guys" tagline which if I remember correctly goes something like this: "Saving the world, one room at a time." Or is that just what the voiceover says before every episode? You might want to check on that. Either way, I love "Saving/Changing the world, one apartment at a time".
