DWR Cans Bedding?

2-16-dwrbedding.jpgWe're staying with friends in Chicago and they have this lovely DWR wool blanket on their guest bed, which we are coveting. It's a thick grey wool with red stitched border and one lone lime green stripe across it. On clicking over to the DWR shop to blog it, we notice that all of their bedding has disappeared! We reviewed it last September and gave it the thumbs up. What happened? Was it just too expensive?

I would really like to know where this went as it is exactly what I'm looking for, too. If anyone has any other ideas for where to get gray bedding with lots of contrasting texture (think mens suiting fabrics) please share. Thanks!

I was looking for the Bedmats they offered a couple weeks ago.

And YES!! They were TOO expensive.

Everything DWR tries to sell is seriously overpriced. The worst part is that apparently there are some people gullible enough to pay the ridiculous asking prices. Oh, well, "There's a sucker born every minute".

DWR too expensive? Nahhh...that couldn't be it...

i bought some linen sheets from them a few months ago - they were on sale, but even at full price they weren't more expensive than other linen sheets i'd seen. on sale, they were a steal!

i'm disappointed they don't have them anymore, i was hoping to buy some more!

my guess is that they decided bedding just isn't what they do - there's no designer name attached, and other fine linens have always been "within reach"...

Beth, You might try ws home for what you're looking for -- they have several bedding sets inspired by menswear textiles currently on sale.

that was our guest bed that max is referring to. we saw that blanket at DWR and LOVED it. since most of their stuff goes on sale at some point, we waited it out and got it for about $80. i agree, they are very overpriced, but if you are patient, they do have great sales. i would also recommend checking out jonathan adler's bedding. our most recent purchase was a beautiful 2 sided duvet cover. http://www.jonathanadler.com/shop/product.php?productid=17026&cat=339&page=1

they don't also call them Design Not Within Reach for nothing...

Actually, it had little to do with price, from what I have heard, and everything to do with the upheaval at the company with entire divisions of buyers getting canned. Anyone remember DWRjax and that entire push? Well, look at the kids selection and see that it's pretty much gone or all on sale. What I heard was that they were looking to focus on their Spanish designs as well as the classics, and to stop branching out into other ventures such as kids/bedding etc. Anyone familiar with the inside workings of DWR could probably elaborate more on the upheaval in the last year.

I liked DWR's approach to the modern bed and purchased DWR bedding (sheets, blanket, pillow envelopes, bed mats) when it was first introduced.

Some have complained the price was too high. You need to compare the price to other heirloom quality bedding- not the crap they sell at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

I feel the high quality of the materials used and the workmanship of the sewing and finishing more then justify the price. Also, the bedding was made in Italy rather then some Chinese sweat shop.

I feel the true test of quality is how well the bedding has held up over the past 14 months- even with weekly washings there has been no pilling, no color fading and the sheets have grown softer with each wash.

I work as a textile designer for Pendleton ( Woolen Mills- in Portland, OR)
We made the blankets for DWR. I believe we may have a few "seconds" available in our outlets as well as other nice wool blankets in our Home Store in Portland. Just call up the store- they can ship! ( not to be an ad for Pendleton- but our products are lovely and not well known in the modern marketplace)
:) enjoy- wool is fabulous..

fabric is the new old wall... Fab Brick.

researching fabric, as i always loved sleeping in tents and being as close to the seasonal temperature changes as possible, i have found that.

"nanotech fabric wears no clothes"

Robin, thanks so much for that tip! I have just gone to your site to check out sale items and see that that is not the place, but you have some lovely items that shall be blogged. Meanwhile, I wish I lived near an outlet. ;-)

Though I know businesses have to make decisions based on logic, etc, I really do think that the bedding line was a very cool idea. It now remains a niche that is waiting to be filled again....

Actually it was quite popular but we expanded a bit fast last year so we cut bedding and kids. You can certainly expect kids to return!

If there are any investors out there that would like to help me fill the modern wool blanket niche- let me know!! I have the designs, skills and connections but alas not the capital. ;)

We purchased a duvet cover and pillow case set during the big DWR bedding clearance sale last year. Unfortunately one of the pillowcases somehow got bleached and we are now unable to replace it. I will think twice or at least buy doubles next time am tempted to buy bedding from anywhere on clearance!

There is another option between paying high prices at DWR and their ilk and cheap stuff at BB&B. Last year I bought great 600 thread count sheets - whole queen set for $69 at Nordstom Rack. Last week I saw 1000 thread count sheets for $79 at Tuesday Morning.

I'm looking for some good quality, affordable, good design bedding - almost exactly what Beth describes above. Any thoughts?

The best bedding for the price, beechwood fiber bedding sold at BB&B, a fabric otherwise known as modal, all natural, ultra soft and warm, beautiful colors too, look much better on the bed than in packaging. I own the taupe (looks like hot cocoa) and the gold. The best set of sheets for $80! That paired up with a douvee cover from Dwell sold via Anthropologie and voila!
