Fresh Direct in the 'hood

freshdirect.bmpFirst came the Clintons, now comes farm fresh okra and chayote.... This just in: Fresh Direct will begin deliveries on June 24th "to parts of ZIP code 10026," otherwise known as Harlem. Move over Soul Plane. Wait until "Pimp My Ride" gets a hold of one of those cute, boxy trucks. But seriously, gentrification can come in worse forms, and we hear nothing but good things about Fresh Direct. Even the way they decide to move into neighborhoods is cool: if enough people from an unserved neighborhood sign up on their web site, they begin service. We understand Harlem residents had been on a registration campaign for months. There's an appealing populism in that. Listen up Bed-Stuy! OHR

If only they would come to Greenwich, CT.

For some reason, I doubt the "Entitled Women in SUVs" contingent really care about good fresh produce when they can get their cooks to do it for them.

I've got to move somewhere a bit more sane

I am wondering if Fresh Direct (or anyone else) has evaluated the potential effects -- in terms of truck traffic volume and vehicle emissions -- of their home delivery service. I'd be very curious to know how it compares to the effects of traditional supermarket delivery in New York City.
