Friday Photo Gallery: What's Our Theme for 2008?

Dear Readers, for the past three years we've run a Friday photo show with Meter Gallery featuring a combination of your and their pictures, centering around a common theme that ties into the home...

• 2005 - Chair &
• 2006 - Home Is...
• 2007 - Through My Window

This year we're doing it again, and we're going to run it across all of our cities. Help us celebrate the home through photography.

But what should our new theme be this year? We're going to decide and start next Friday, so jump in!

Comments (38)

No suggestions on the theme just yet, but mercy, that "Chair and Dead Wife" is a disturbing photo...

"Swanky or Simple" -- show some luxe homes and some pared back, plain but athletic spaces...

'Entrances', or how about:
'Nighttime at home'.

the door and entrance ideas are nice, but wouldn't it just be a whole year of ... doors? open, closed, textures, etc...

what about "light"? light is necessary for our psychological health as human beings, it is a wonderful aspect of the home that can be introduced via windows, lamps, color (on the walls), mirrors, architecture (even doorways). you could even look at it like "light" = bright room. plus, photography is writing with light, so you're speaking directly to what makes a photograph - light.

(fwiw i think maybe a month of doorways would be cool. i just think a year would get redudant.)

oh oh maybe we can have "parts/aspects of your home"? and vary the "part" each month? maybe its too big of an overlap with the monthly themes... but...
door, floor, cabinet, table, bed/pillow/blanket, bookcase, shelf, lamp, time/clock, computer (since we all probably have one), cleaning/water, warmth/heat, cooking/food, celebrating (for december!).

I like the "light" theme, too.

love '2000 and ate' as this will connect and inspire another AT site. Also serves as a perfect friday reminder for the main sight in terms of your overall mission.

Personally I like the "swanky or simple" but then I like juxtaposisions. two thousand and ate is also good. Light isnt bad but may be hard to capture well in a photo.
Oh yeah.....I find the photo above disturbing too....art? good taste? naaaaahhhh not in my world.

I like the idea of something having to do with light, although at the moment, I'm at the loss for any clever verbage to make it sing.

Hi Curtis!

The trick to this is finding a theme that is broad enough that we can fit into it 50 times and narrow enough to feel like a challenge.

The Light idea is really nice, but we'd need to shape it a bit.

Ideally, it's a phrase that we finish with the photograph.

How about "The Light is..."?

I like the "Light" idea if someone can give it direction (or a good phrase)...

"Light the way"? Or "Bringing to Light..."?

Maxwell - can we streamline that to, "Light is..."? :)

How about "Reflecting on..."?
It can be interpreted in various ways (i.e. mirrors, shiny new surfaces/objects, reflections & refractions of light, a serene object/area/room, etc.), so it's broad enough to make it unique & inspiring, yet definitive enough to still make sense.
What do ya think? :)

I'm with oyla on a light theme. It has so many interpretations, and yes, it does have an effect on our mood, even in the most mundane circumstances like school/work, home, outdoors, etc...

I like 2000 and ate - very topical

considering the DIY vibe of the site though, I thought "Oops: design" could be fun - basically any accidental designs, re-purposed designs (tv's as fish tanks...), or random/natural patterns.

on a personal note: I'm a furniture designer currently living in Chicago. I'm new to this site and already a big fan.

How about "the frame"
This could be picture frames, door frames, the frame of a chair...etc

I liked the light idea, so the themes of "Reflecting on" or "Bringing to Light" are the best above.
Also the door and frame ideas were great, too.

'Looking Within'
'Off the Wall'
'The Comfort Zone' or 'Peaceful Places'

Since all photographs are about light- that may be too general.

I like the "Reflecting on..." or the "2000 and ate" ideas. The latter would be particularly suited for the kitchen site I think. Or maybe R&R, (Rest and Recuperation or Rest and Recreation) and have photos of beds or napping spots or spots around your home and garden dedicated to hobbies or leisure activities. I think it would make a nice inspirational send off for the weekend.

My favorites so far are "Why don't you", and "After hours". I think these could lead to some very intriguing results.

LIGHT, LIGHT, and more LIGHT. I really like this concept. There are so many different perceptions of what light is. I can't imagine getting bored with it. Nite lights, flash lights, neon lights, spot lights (isn't this a 70's funk song, lol). Day light, street lights, lamp light......

"In the Light" or "The Light of....."

I just hope it's not vignettes... I'm so over vignettes it's not even funny.

I like the light idea though! Or balconies/patios?

How about 'Cropped Corners'. That would be cool, close ups and cropped images of small area's that can be left out of larger home pictures. Really helps to get the details in the home.

"You're Welcome"

How we make ourselves feel good in our homes, or how we make guests feel when they are visiting.

Entry ways, small gifts for friends, special touches with visitors in mind, etc. Things that make us say thanks to our home and our loved ones.

"color wonderful" and focus on room colors as well as art that people choose.

yay, i'm glad you guys like the light idea! i don't know how to frame it better, though. in particular limiting to the start of a paragraph... "light is" or "light of" or "light in" all would work; but i'm not the one writing :-)

i like two thousand and ate. i do think it will work better for the kitchn.

man, there are a lot of nice ones. i don't think you can go wrong, really.
