apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

How To Get Rid of This?

7-26--bed.jpgA week or so back we posted that we were considering a new column and many, many of you commented on it.

While the response was overwhelmingly postive, we did note that the naysayers had a really good point: it could easily get too negative. In light of this we're altering the name to How to Get Rid of This? and taking submissions that see to find creative solutions to white elephants in their homes. If it becomes a comment hellhole, we'll cut it.

If you are earnestly seeking a solution, send it in. It can be for couples who loathe the other's belongings OR those who simply don't know how to get rid of something they dislike. Send GOOD pictures and a full description along to editor (at) Apartmenttherapy (dot) com and put HOW TO GET RID OF THIS? in the subject line.

Title suggestion: "To have and to hold"

I look forward to reading this!! Sounds like an interesting column

How about "what should I do with this?" and the crowd could pitch in with suggestions like sell it, re-cover it, re-purpose it, send it to live with a relative, etc.

Title suggestion: "Can this Tchotchke be saved?"

I think it would be more interesting to have BOTH partner in the household contribute an item of the OTHERS they can't stand.

ATers vote on which one gets chucked.

Sort of Forced Cure by Popular Vote.

"How to get rid of this?" I thought the idea was to post something that one partner hated but would NOT get rid of because of the other partner's attachment to it. Sounds funny and harmless to me. I mean, it's the kind of thing that goes both ways, and these would obviously be items that the couple had discussed/argued over before, not surprise attacks or anything.

"How to get rid of this" sounds like a much less interesting idea. And let's face it, ANY post has the potential for nasty comments.

I like that idea, Patrick. I can think of two things to post right now, and I'm honestly not sure which one the ATers would vote for!

Great idea, Patrick (T.O.O.)because we like voting on stuff here. The competition aspect sounds like fun.

Oh, this reminds me of When Harry Met Sally! Remember the wagon wheel coffee table?

Harry Burns: "Please, Jess, Marie. Do me a favor, for your own good, put your name in your books right now before they get mixed up and you won't know whose is whose. 'Cause someday, believe it or not, you'll go 15 rounds over who's gonna get this coffee table. This stupid, wagon wheel, Roy Rogers, garage sale COFFEE TABLE."

Jess: "I thought you liked it!"

Harry Burns: "I was being nice!"

Hello All!

This idea sounds great! We all have somthing in our homes, that we want to keep,
but not as it is. Like using old stufff & make it new, stuff.........

after reading rob's post, i'd rather have people present should we get rid of something not how do we get rid of something.

Rob-

I love that scene!!

I also love the part of the scene that comes next, after Sally goes outside to talk to Harry.

Marie says to Jess (can't remember the exact quote) 'No matter what happens, I just want you to know, I will never, ever want that wagon wheel coffee table.'

How about the diner scene?
"I'll have what SHE's having."

I like marm's idea for the column name: Not or Not.

What I like about the wagon wheel coffee table scene is when Sally (Meg Ryan) is asked what she thinks about the coffee table and she just wrinkles her nose. It's perfect.

OKay, you submit and say how you want to phrase it and we'll take it from there........

On "Clean Sweep" when they have the couple do a yard sale, whoever sells the most $ worth of stuff gets to keep the thing their mate hates most of theirs.

P2's idea sounds kind of like that, in a good way. At least it's kind of a "fair fight" instead of one spouse getting us all to "gang up" on the other one.

I'm amazed that Freecycle hasn't been mentioned yet. If you have something -- anything -- that you don't want, but you are loathe to contribute it to the back of a garbage truck, you offer it through the Freecycle website (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecyclenewyorkcity/). Chances are that *somebody* will want it. I've found furniture, pillow batting, drinking glasses -- and I've gotten rid of old bookcases, rugs, furniture. There are Freecycle groups all over the US.

Of course, this doesn't address the issue of one person loving a piece of decor that his/her partner hates, but if there's something you know you want to just ditch, but you're not sure the best way to do it, Freecycle can make it easy.

Ding-ding-ding! I think "to have and to hold" is kind of a great one.
