In the News: Architecture Magazines

11-17-architect.jpgCheck it out! Slate has a great article concerning the demise of architecture magazines. It speaks specifically to the roll of shelter magazines and enthusiasm for modernism. Architecture folded last month but Architect may be what the dying genre needs! Via Gothamist. —aaron

I'm abashed to admit I've read none of the three seminal essays that Rybczynski mentions in that article. (Fortunately my copy of Rybczynski's "Home" has thus far survived my various proto-Cure purges.)

I quit reading architectural criticism from the glossies because of all the jargon lifted from literary theory. Rybczynksi is quite right to point to the liberal mags as a good source of architectural crit. I've noticed as much, although I haven't kept up.

I don't look at the shelter mags, either, except when I'm in the book chains. Then I scarf them up with relish. Usually, like the fashion mags, they turn out to be a disappointment, although you never know when you might see something exciting.

if "architecture" folded, how come it's still coming to my mail box. i just got a copy yesterday. "architect" also arrived in my box and it's the first time i've even been tempted to read anything in an american architecture magazine in about 5 years.

I went and read Philip Johnson's "The Seven Crutches of Architecture". My goodness, I never thought of him as such a romantic. I guess when it comes down to it, they all are.
