Janovic Kills Ralph Lauren: Benjamin Moore is Spoiler

8-8-ben-moore.jpgLess Choice. Just in time for the busiest painting season of the year, we just heard today that Janovic, now Benjamin Moore, has taken Ralph Lauren Paints and Pratt and Lambert off the shelves! That's it. No more. It's "exclusively Benjamin Moore" from now on (to quote one of the folks at the store on the phone right now).

Much as we admire Warren Buffet (owner of BM and Janovic), all of this has to do with the growing consolidation within the paint market. We blogged the before: What's Up With Janovic/Plaza?, but had no idea that the new owners of Janovic would be so stupid as to remove REALLY GOOD PRODUCTS from their shelves, all in the interest of selling more of their own paint.

While Ralph Lauren paint is not the best quality, its colors are awesome and the paint quality has improved.

We also heard that Benjamin Moore's paints are NO LONGER LATEX. Mark Chamberlain, who uses them every day, says they are now ACRYLIC based in order to make them tougher, but this makes it harder to paint and often makes the surface less smooth.

They apparently did this because Consumer Reports rated their paint below that of Behr on the "toughness" scale. Not caring much for "finish", Ben Moore changed their recipe to compete, losing the faith of good painters everywhere.

What's next?

To find Raph Lauren paints go to Home Depot.

I think the Pratt & Lambert loss is a bigger one. They had gorgeous colors, like #2015, Loam.

Score for Benjamin Moore, though.

Ummm, it's also possible that the Rl & P&L licenses was about to expire and the intellectual property rights owners wanted too much and/or are taking the brands to another retailer. Perhaps Home Depot had a clause allowing for exclusivity when Benjamin Moore's ended? Dunno the specifics, but I wouldn't necessarily point a finger at the retailer. Takes two to tango, or so I've heard. :)

Yeah, I agree it slightly unfair to make B-M the villain in the Janovic story.

Poor Ralph. Kind of strange that Ralph Lauren would get kicked out of Janovic, right? He's a pretty classy operation. I have to say, though, that the linen treatment I did in a bedroom a few years ago looked NOTHING like it did in the photos they showed in the sample book. We had to go back 5 times to get the color to look good. That may be part of their reasoning. Maybe it was just too much work; not just the competition thing.

I am a big P&L fan -- and really notice how much more difficult their stuff is to find.

But since BEHR was mentioned, I have to share our experience with them...

HATE LOATHE ans DESPISE BEHR, after their primer caused an intercoat adhesion problem with the drawall compound. We sent samples of the problem to their lab, and they wouldn't admit any blame, but couldn't deny that it was their paint either (it was pretty unlikely to be the drywall compound). So we have a house with a very fragile painted surface --- in certain spots, just the touch of a fingernail is enough for the primer - and all subsequent coats of paint - to peel off on huge chunks. In any case, their guarantee would only have gotten us replacement primer, not the labour to fix the primer, apply the primer, apply the other paint and pay for the replacement finish paint. Lesson learned: go for the best quality - you will pay dearly for cheap paint.

I was just at the Lowes in Brooklyn this past weekend. I thought their paint selection was serious lacking. Any recommendations on a great paint supplier in Brooklyn? (Recent transplant from the city and I don't want to haul paint from Janovick).

Say what you will about their motivation, but Benjamin Moore simply makes the best paint, hands down. Especially the Aura line. And anybody that paints for a living will tell you that BM is the be all and end all of paint.

Monika1, I totally agree with you about Behr. It's utter rubbish. I tried painting a room red using Behr's "California Poppy." The paint was so thin... it was literally like applying stain. It had no coverage/hiding whatsoever... even applying 10 gallons and 10 layers of the stuff still would not have been sufficient. However, the other Home Depot staple, Glidden, is actually not too bad at all. I am utterly enthralled by their "Scroll Beige."

As for Lowes, their housebrand Valspar is pretty good stuff. Their primer is really good... although they seem to have changed the formulation recently; it's somewhat thinner than before.

Can you tell I've been painting a 2600 square foot house recently? lol

Just watched the documentary "The Corporation" last night - a fiercely intellectual depth charge into the corporate mind - and based on what I learned from it, I'd guess that BM wanted to consolidate their branding. An unfortunate bit of decluttering that leaves home decorating folks in the lurch.

With Behr, it really matters which formula you buy. They do have a thick one with good hiding power.

Home Depot will also tint Behr to match the Ralph Lauren colors.

Designerny, if you want Benjamin Moore there is a good place on 3rd ave and (I think) 14th or 16th Sts in Brooklyn.

I like the Lowes in Brooklyn. Service is really helpful -- you can call and they actually will see if they have something in stock.

You might try Pintchik for paint. I end up there a lot. Flatbush at Bergen.

Benjamin Moore is (was) the best paint at that price point. You can get much better paints if you want to pay more, like Schreuder.

Although if they really switched from latex to acrylic, I would no longer consider them the best. Home Depot, here I come.

Take my advice, if you really love the colors of those two lines, just try to get their fan decks or color samples before they disappear and just have your local supplier match the color. Personally I hate the quality of the RL paints although the colors and concepts were interesting, but I used it on a project once and it turned out HORRIBLE.
