We've got more reader's interiors and artwork to show this week and we'll be highlighting more galleries, artists and sources to help you get a grip on what to put on your walls. Keep sending your tips.
Over the weekend we were working on the AT House Tour Book, which is due out later this year, and were impressed all over again with Tyke and Jon's Topanga Canyon Casa, particularly because of all the art on display. This is what we wrote:
Of particular note is their art collection. While you will be hard pressed to find it all in our source list, the art on their walls makes a big difference in setting a tone...
Every piece is colorful curiosity and comes with a story of a friend or store or of having made it themselves. And there’s a lot of it for a small home. If you stripped the rooms of their artistic contributions, this house would be extremely bare.
Art is usually the last thing on our list when it comes to setting up a home, but without it, a home is not complete. What is it that art does? It isn't practical. It isn't functional.
Art speaks to our highest selves. After we've eaten and done the dishes, we want our home to also nourish our spirit. Good, healthy pieces of artwork, whether by friends, children or strangers, do just this.
So, again, we ask you: What do you have on your walls?
Very charming and unpretentious place...
beautiful!
The tree stump with the green phone looks plastic, unlike the outdoor stumps. It's precious.
Your place is so lovely, I am really mystified that you haven't gotten more comments. I find it interesting that the editors at AT placed it next to Paige's collection on the site. And, unfortunately, Paige's place is so controversial I think it's taken attention from your place.
The juxtaposition is interesting, though. Your place actually demonstrates skillful collecting. I think collectors often forgot that the most important part of collecting is editing.
Let me get off my soap box and let you know how much I love your place. I love how you have achieved a simple, clean modern aesthetic, but with a cozy-cottage appeal. Your outdoor areas are so cute and I love the placement of modern furniture outside. I love the Fatima hanging in your dining room, and I love how you have allowed her a place of prominence and not eclipsed her with too much around her to compete with her magnificence.
The white dining table is adorable with the orange glass, and I love the orange pillows. It is very charming that all of your art is made by your friends. I personally find this so much more interesting than "fine art" that is purchased for too much money.
The green bed room is beautiful, and it intrigues me how you carried that theme through to the living room by placing the green phone there.
Overall the look is quite pleasing. Thank you for sharing.
