July is Flower Box Month!

2005_18_flowerbox.jpgWhich means that we believe strongly in green and colorful growing things amidst the concrete of the city. They are important...

  • They keep our feet on the ground.
  • They teach us care and stewardship for the earth.
  • They humidify and clean our dirty city air.
  • They cool.
  • They provide small islands of natural ecosystems for beneficial bugs and birds.
  • They visually delight.
  • They are alive.
  • They are symbols of optimism.

Perhaps, given today' weather, "humidify our air" is not such a selling feature. :)

All of the above and more.
Parsley, cilantro, basil, and nasturiums, I grow from seed. Perennials I buy from the Botanic Gardens, farmers' market, and the occasional hardware store. Sometimes I get SHARED plants -- someone dividing their garden, or digging up their woods. This happens when we visit the country.
And every once in a while I get something off the back of a truck - we have interesting business models in Brooklyn.

    Do plants really humidify?
    I thought they replaced oxygen.

A good number of my herb plants come from the grocers. What started the garden were plants I bought from the nursery to satisfy my instant pleasure. The rest are the cannas, irises and hibiscus from friends and families gardens. I really love getting seeds and bulbs from people I love.
