Getting back in the saddle finally, we wanted to thank our guest posters, Grace Bonney and Jen Bekman, as well as our managing editor, Paul McKinley, for rowing the ship in our absence (To reference Patrick, it seems that the class enjoyed the substitute teachers and got to have class outside more than once. :-))
Now July is Flowerbox Month, which means that it is time to celebrate and share all the ideas we have for growing things on, around, in front of or on top of our apartments. We will be looking for resources and tips, while you can share your flowerboxes with others right here.

Here in pastoral Brooklyn some of us have decks and backyards! I grow many windowboxes full of mint (the cocktail garden) and pots of basil, sage, etc (the cooking garden)
One healthy house plant is all I can manage in my studio. Would love an outdoor space or terrace where I could grow some other plants.
i clicked roof garden but i have a terrace.
the fire escape. Though I don't know if this is legal. I do move them off when it's windy and take them in when it's too hot. I have a dozen potted plants out there now - a huge umbrella plant, a Bonsai, venus flytrap, geraniums, rosemary, gardenias, and two cactus plants.I dread the day the board tells me to take them all in, because there isn't room for them in here.
I actually live in a house with a lovely (?!) yard, but I still enjoy all the great stuff I see here on AT!
I have boxes on railings and floors of 2 outdoor balconies in beautiful Park Slope (she said smugly).
That makes at least something in Park Slope that isn't boring and dowdy.
Them's fighting words . . .
but really, I just don't understand why you'd say that about Park Slope, Letitia.
When I lived in Chicago, I had herbs and plants growing on fire escapes, roofs and the back porches of my apartments. Now I have an apartment in Dallas and I keep calling my patio my yard to the laughter of everyone here. They have no idea since they are so used to green land around them. Now I have a kicking tea garden along with other plants my dad dug up from his garden. Granted its a potted garden on mostly a slab of concrete with about 12 inches of dirt around it and that's just fine with me. It's a luxury in comparision to what I had in the past.
have a 5x8 balcony with more plants than anything else... two outdoor swivel chairs that rock with a small table between them to enjoy the plants on
