apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

June is Outdoor Home Month!

6-25-lighting-outdoors.jpgThis week we're focusing on outdoor lighting. Over the weekend, we did a lot with our own lighting and had extension cords running everywhere. Our workhorses continue to be tea lights inside of Ikea Rotera lanterns, but we also are really liking Martha Stewart's copper outdoor string lights (so cheap!) that we found at Kmart (this is what they seem to have now) but are identical to Smith and Hawken's Industrial Light Strings.

What do you do? Send us your pics with OUTDOOR HOME in the subject field and we'll blog you if it's good (newyork @ apartmenttherapy . com).

Right now we have small oil lanterns we plan on using, just a soon as we have a few minutes to spend on the balcony.

We use a range of citronella candles on our tables and benches, two torches (they are classy, not the lame kind, i swear) in a symmetrical set up at opposite ends of the width of our yard and a set of 6 amber colored solar lights strategically placed throughout the garden.

My neighbor and I put up flower-shaped string lights on our shared fire escape. It can be plugged into either apartment with an extension cord.

I'm planning an outdoor wedding dinner. Any suggestions on other lanterns for votive candles that are reasonably priced? On CB2, they have the whirly hanging candle holder but it would be great to get something cheaper since I'll be buying at least 100 of them.

Here's the link to the CB2 hanging candle holder:

I just got some string lights at Ikea and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to hang them outside on my patio. What is a good way to attach them under the eaves?

I got two outdoor lights (they look similar to lanterns) from Ikea for under $15 each and hung one on each side of my little terrace as a cheap alternative to hardwiring outdoor sconces (I have an outlet on my terrace. Since they can hold fairly bright bulbs, it's way better lighting than candles alone.

The only downside is the dangly white cord, which I covered with electrical tape that normally blends into the gray frame, except when it gets unstuck and blows around. . .sigh. . .

After the squirrels chewed through 4 sets of patio lights, I have conceded (picture me, shaking my fist). So now I use a hurricane with a pillar to light the table and small votives in glass holders strategically placed around the patio and on the stairs leading up to the deck.
