Love in the Air

statueLib.jpgThe safron gates are coming, and everyone is looking for a view. The top of the Met, a friend's roof, or a tenement window with you stretching through it -- feet hooked under the sofa, cold air on cheek. New York is a city of vertigo and views, and Monday is Valentine's day. We discover on NewYorkology.com that a select few will get married Monday at the top of the Empire State Building. Lovely: butterflies in the stomach, the world spreading out in front, and someone to hold your hand by the rail...

Just heard Jeanne-Claude (one half of the Christo team) on the radio saying their projects are never designed "for the birds" or rather, to be seen from an aerial view. They're best viewed on foot, on the ground.

(I'm guessing "Surrounded Islands" was perhaps an exception...) That project, and a speech he gave at RISD, turned me into a Christo fan. I was lucky enough to see Surrounded Islands during a low approach into Miami International Airport, and didn't know it was still there until looking down onto the waters of Biscayne Bay, seeing it dotted with neon pink doughnouts. AMAZING. Even better, it was the day they were removing it, and one had begun to be pulled away from its island core by a tugboat. Will never forget it.

Anyone have an idea for a last minute, fairly inexpensive, romantic destination or activity for tonight? I didn't think we would be able to do anything tonight and our plans changed at the last minute.

PS It's also our anniversary... NINE YEARS!!

I'm a big fan of a nighttime Staten Island ferry ride for cheap romance. Or a trip to the top of the Empire State Building. Some place where you can get a distance on the sparkly nighttime city and it seems all ordered and silent and dreamy.
