Madonna, Versace & Lucite

2005_2_22_madonna.jpg
Sexy. In yet another incarnation - and one we like - Madonna is currently pimping clothes for Versace. It's a hot fit and the furniture looks good too. Ruth saw these ads and sent us this tip and question:

Being the design addict I am, all I could concentrate on was the excellent lucite furniture she's surrounded by. I'm particularly taken by the little piece on wheels in the left of this picture. Any thoughts on where I might be able to get something like it?

We liked the picture so much we thought to share it directly and solicit responses on the furniture. We would look at Plexi-Craft, Thomas Plastic, Plushpod Canal Plastics at Canal and Church Street. (Thanks, Ruth!) MGR

cb2.com has some lucite tables that look interesting. I've only seen them online so can't vouch for quality.

As someone who has the aforementioned cb2 Perspex nesting tables, they're quite solid little pieces. west elm used to carry colored Lucite tables as well, though I don't know if that's still the case.

I thought plastic was verboten

You can get a similar piece to that sort of linen caddy item at Habitat.

It's marketed as a bookshelf, and I think it comes in red, clear and smoke perspex.

I think lucite gets a pass from the plastics ban. It's a good choice for this ad campaign -- looks cool but keeps the emphasis on the clothes. And Madonna, or course.

As in all good things in life, please Lucite in moderation.

As for the ad, it looks like Madonna is the hot company shrink at The Container Store's corporate headquarters.

You know, there are good designers who use plastic. I adore those Raymond Loewy Doubinski Fréres/DF2000 space age plastic pieces...

I also love the Philippe Starck Eros chairs.

lucite looks great in a versace ad, but in the everyday it is high maintaince. Small accessories do add sparkle to a room.

I often see lucite pieces that I like a lot, but the first thing I always think of is that it's going to turn "foggy" as it ages. Anyone know what I'm talking about or have any experience? Or am I just used to seeing cheap plastic furniture?

Valerie, Thanks for the Habitat idea; those are pretty close to the one in the photo, if not actually the same. I like the lucite tables at cb2 as well.

"the hot company shrink at The Container Store's corporate headquarters." Snark!

I don't think I would want an all-lucite room but I think it's a nice additional esp. where you don't want the piece to take up a lot of visual space. I like the kind of Regency Hollywood look and you gotta have lucite for that.

Terry--
What industry folks are saying is that there have in fact been technological changes in plexi/Lucite that prevent fogging up. It seems to be one of the reasons designers jumped all over it again, apparently.

Go to topdeq.com. They sell fabulous lucite furniture from Phillipe Stark. I was also taken by the furniture in the ad. Ab Fab! I have the Phillipe Stark "Louis Ghost Chair." Low maintanance, and look great as a contrast in a vintage 30's inspired room. No cloudiness.

Does anyone know where I can find the glass table/desk in the Versace ad featuring Madonna. I've searched everywhere online, and, cannot find it. I actually found the exact table before the ad came out, and, thought to myself that it would make a great desk. The sales person has detered me trying trying to purchase it, since, he claims the glass base easily breaks off, but, I think I will take my chances since I simply adore that table. Any help would be much appreciated.

Acrylic/Lucite is the best furniture is beautiful I decorated my whole house with acrylic. My friends are getting it now.
When I come home from work all my stress and worries are gone once I enter my Philadelphia home it's a really good feeling to have all clear furniture and accessories people are amazed once they enter.
You have to clean it only with NOVUS 1 Acrylic Cleaner.
