Pull out your credit cards. What is it with DWR? They have a cute micro-sale every other week. And hey, DOOR - Design Out Of Reach, why does each sale offer to give us a little off, but never too much? Last month it was a 10% chair sale, but you had to buy at least 6, and now it is 10% off everything for 5 days only, excluding Herman Miller. And what is with all the flyers falling out of our New York Times this morning? Jeesh!
And HELLO West Elm! Officially opening their doors last Monday on 18th Street, West Elm has finally made it to the city that inspired it. For those of you who really get sick of looking at catalogs and like to TOUCH furniture before you buy it, this will be a relief. And keep your fingers crossed that West Elm continues to be innovative and improve their quality. This is a great resource that needs to keep going and not get the blahs, like it's bigger cousins....
If you want to find out what all the ruckus is about, don't miss Hudson Furniture's opening tonight. The 2,000 square foot showroom is beautifully arrayed with simple wood furniture inspired by "Nakashima and Brancusi." This is no West Elm, this is high end slabs of wood, and we shall see who brings this primitive style into the 2000's more successfully: Hudson (the restless upstart) or Tucker Robbins (the lion king).

Design Within Reach is about accessibility not pricing. It never ceases to amaze me how bitchy and whiney writers at Apartment Therapy are. Complain, complain, complain. JEESH
A tipsy (at the time) friend of mine saw the DWR catalog on my counter and thought it said "Desire Within Reach". She thought it was pretty cool.
While Design Within Reach may in fact be about accessibility, there has always been AMPLE room for misinterpretation of their name and what they intended by it... when you say a purchase is "within reach" while shopping, isn't that a statement of affordability? (Perhaps why more and more they present themselves as as DWR, and leave out the Reach.)
But I think MGR's point may have been that, for all the frequency, promotion and hoopla of DWR's sales, there ends up being less than huge savings. I agree. I'd rather see fewer sales, but with biggger savings. Or cheaper shipping all the time with no sales at all except on clearance stuff...
And if you can't stand the whine, get off the Eames Compact Sofa.
What's up with DWR's shipping costs? Last month I considered buying a $360 mirror, and I recall the price being just over $400 shipped (so lets say $45 shipping.) I just checked again with the sale, and the mirror's $324, but shippping is $97?! Give me a break.
