Expanding. Yesterday, Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters Inc. announced plans for a 4th concept (existing: Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People) referred to as the "Greenhouse concept". Currently without an official name, the new concept will focus on lifestyle home and garden products and will include live plants and flowers. "Greenhouse" is scheduled to make its debut in early 2008. Here's the news.

Good On them!
Green is a great way to go, I can't wait to see the end result.

Question: is it going to come to Canada? I am still waiting for the other companies to come over here- so far, just Urban Outfitters!

Seriously, Anthropologie needs to come to Toronto at the very least! I was over the moon when they announce Crate & Barrell would be.
I should declare bankruptcy now.

I've been boycotting this group of stores for several years now, since reading about the owner's politics (on a posting on this site!). Anyone have any updates on that?

Ditto, Pixie. I unfortunately fell in love with these plates:

... and now have a set in fun multicolors, but I mostly try to boycott Urban Outfitters etc because of the politics. It seems especially sketchy in that their aesthetic is so anti-establishment, while the folks at the top of the company have donated heavily to people like Rick Santorum. Shady stuff.
Any updates on the current political situation with this company would be great.

Double ditto, Pixie.
Have they stopped giving money to sh*ts like Santorum?
I love their stuff, but I just can't stomach that.

I also have been avoiding Urban Outfitters, for the reasons discussed above. Anthropologie isn't really my style, so avoiding it has been easy. I occasionally find myself browsing on the Urban Outfitters website, though, and I, too, would like to know if they've changed their policies.
I did a quick google search but didn't find any new information. If anyone has updated info, I'd love to know what the current situation might be.

Maybe this is what you are referring to:
Philadelphia Weekly archive from June 11th, 2003.
It's a bit dated, but worth the read. I think the content of the story has been blown WAY out of proportion. As much as I personally dislike the politics of Rick Santorum, Haynes has done a lot of positive things with his company (Look at the recent story in Metropolis posted here about the company's re-use of the Philadelphia Navy Yard). Urban Outfitters supports a lot of creative people and creative land re-use while running a successful business. As a designer, I am more perturbed by Urban Outfitters designers ripping off t-shirt designs from smaller shops/designers...

Richard Hayne, CEO and owner of both Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie contributes money to ultra right-wing anti-gay and anti-abortion lobbyists. This is all the while selling products and a lifestyle that is proportedly "anti-establishment". I will NOT give my money to a store like that, and I encourage you to join the growing boycott of these stores. Put your money where your mouth is.
