When are the guests arriving? With our Fall Contest over, and Thanksgiving done, we're rolling into the height of winter party season. Therefore, we're going to be spending the next four weeks (until Xmas) concentrating on getting our homes in order for guests, ie. partying and entertaining.
Having folks over?
You've got to clean up, get out the nice tableware, light the candles and uncork something good. We're going to blog all our tips, but what are your secrets?
What are your tips? Send in pics of your party set up and we'll post them.

yes and no. not for the holidays per se, but rather for my birthday, which is in december. if I don't have people over, it gets lost in the shuffle for who can score the best christmas presents and/or parties. my event is "no gifts", btw.

my birthday is also in december so i like to do something... but this year i simply don't have the time. next year, i'm definitely gonna make it happen. i also encourage a no-gift policy but ask folks to donate to a charity or two that i love.

Please define a little and a bunch.
Tip 1: Prepare (or partially prepare) food the days before and then re-heat.
Tip 2: Don't worry if the house is not spotless. I think 'not spotless' is better than spotless and smelling of cleanser. I cannot convince my wife of this, however.

Most of my friends are going home over Christmas break so I'm having a party December 8 for them. Depending on exam schedules, I'm expecting anywhere from 5-20 to show up...

If it's anything like last year, I'll have a few small gatherings on the weekends but over 60 for NYE, and they will happily change their shoes (dancers, ya know).

we have an annual christmas/hanukkah party, and this year is no exception. it's open house; we usually have about 60 people show up in and out.

We had the GREATEST Halloween party last month! We were planning on tearing up the carpets the following weekend, so we decided to have a huge bash. We covered the furniture with "blood" stained sheets, put plastic tablecloths on the wood furniture and let our guests go nuts. The carpets were destroyed (as planned) but cleanup of the rest of the house was relatively easy.
During the holiday season we host Thanksgiving and Christmas at our place. Fresh flowers and a few candles always make the place look and smell great. If we have any clutter, we hide it in the closet under the stairs or in the bedroom. I'm pedantic about the bathroom being clean so that always gets a good scrub. Once the guests arrive we greet them with a glass of wine!
Next year we'll have overseas and interstate guests through our place for our wedding, 3 family birthdays, Christmas and New Years. It's going to be madness!

i just moved from a great party apartment (for dinner parties and larger) to a very small studio. no more parties. but the building does have a really great public roofdeck so we are already planning the summer cocktails!
