apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

October is Fall Colors Month!

10-10-fallcolors.jpgIt's Columbus Day, it's raining and we spent the weekend feeling the stiff transition from summer warmth to fall chill on Sunday. All around the colors are slowly fading into deep brown and maroons.

This is when coming indoors at the end of the day can almost put you in an ecstatic state. You are wet, tired and hungry, but as you step across your threshhold, you feel the warmth and the familiar smells of home. A shower, a change of clothes and a snack later and, as you sit in your favorite chair, it's all good again. (Photo via Darkmatter)

Today is Thanksgiving Day here in Canada. We are headed over the in-laws for a big dinner.

I start a new job next Monday, so I have this week off. I just came home from a 4 mile walk through Prospect Park. I picked up some Genko leaves from the path that I am going to sketch for a quilt pattern I am starting this afternoon. And I'm making a homemade chicken pot pie for dinner. I am loving this weather!

MGR--
Nothing like a weekend of stiff transition.

You New Yorkers are so cute... here in San Francisco, October means the start of our warm season. Yup, not only are we Boston-with-gratuitous-nudity, we're dislocated to the southern hemisphere.

Leaves aren't quite changing here in DC, but I'm living in the land of government holidays...in other words, my friends who work for the government have a holiday and I have a stressful workday...and no fall colors yet to distract me from it...fortunately, I still have AT to give me color! ;)

I have a holiday today (sorry! don't hate me...) I have reorganization mania, using all furniture I already have (a la that show on HGTV). I had a sudden inspiration this am that I could take the TV, VCR, and cable box and other stuff off the ugly IKEA TV corner unit (which was not in a corner) and put the TV onto a long, white Parsons bench (white, 60" long) that I got at a local vintage/used furniture store and had been using as a multi-purpose item. Then I took a couple of white Target shoe shelves and put them underneath, with the VCR/cable boxes on one and other boxed things on the other. It looks fabulous! (Sorry-no pix-must get camera. Open to all recommendations.)

Then, thinking I would probably put the TV unit on Craig'slist, I turned to the wall of mismatched storage units on one wall of the bedroom. One unit had been the shoe shelves, stacked together into one unit (not used for shoes, but narrow open shelving), which were now under the Parsons bench in the LR. I tried the corner TV stand in the bedroom. Didn't fit in any corner, but I put it in the middle of the wall, between two windows. Acceptable! Much better than all the stuff I had there before which just didn't go together. Temporary, since I need to find just the right piece to put against that wall, which is taking quite some time, but will probably be an IKEA credenza or similar, since I have a credit at IKEA.

Then, speeding along on carrot juice and the high of reorg, I started decluttering more stuff that was stored in aforementioned storage units against the bedroom wall, as well as the closet. I am about to put two storage items on Craigslist, since I got rid or or reorganized so much stuff.

What a great day off!

Pixie, I wanna come play at YOUR apartment! I'm in the mood to rearrange but have a massive writing project looming over me all week.

Everybody over to my place! I have a little more carrot juice.
Wende, your reorg time will come..

I could've really used a day off today to tidy up my apartment and get it in the fall mood (was busy all weekend). When I worked for liberal no-profits they didn't take Columbus Day off because "the man was a charlatan!" and now at a conservative non-profit, well, why take a day off when work can be done? Bleh. I'm with you all in spirit - move some furniture around for me! :^ )
