The storm has hit and the trees are falling!
After last week's devastation of O at Home and rumors about Domino, this week comes the announcement that Cottage Living was shuttered by Time Inc. yesterday.
>> Cottage Living Folds - Gawker
Survivors include: Domino, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, Elle Decor, Better Homes and Gardens, DWELL, Southern Living and Coastal Living.

Please, Domino, don't leave us!! You are sometimes the only thing that can cheer me up on a dreary day.

I am not surprised that Cottage Living bit the dust, but I *am* surprised that Coastal Living is hanging on. And I agree with d-love in hoping that Domino will continue to be published. I am still holding out hope that House & Garden will come back after the economy improves.

"The storm has hit and the trees are falling!"
That's sort of ironic considering magazines are made of paper.

I really hope that Domino doesn't fall. My husband says I look like a kid at Christmas opening presents when I read it each month. I would be so sad.

I know an editor at Domino and she hasn't said anything about the tough times. Given the comments coming from Conde Nast, I think (and hope) that Domino is pretty safe considering it's growing popularity.
I asked a close friend who is a media buyer for a major high end retailer what his opinion on the situation and he thinks Domino is pretty safe too. Let's hope they are right!

That's a shame. I really liked CL.
Do you know that I'm STILL getting email solicitations from the marketing arm for O At Home? I've taken to engaging them in a conversation to let them know that they've folded.

Bummer I really liked Cottage Living... I still like my Domino, but not as much as I did when I first subscribed (I've been subscribing since the very first issue). I think they've changed their focus and target a much more affluent market.

Oh no! Cottage Living was such a great small-space design magazine. I've never lived in a cottage, but living in small NYC apartments it's was so nice to have a whole design magazine devoted to design on an appropriate scale.

i big, big
Domino is overpriced and unimaginative, and yet, I subscribe. Hopefully they'll bring down their scale and their price and get more creative. I'd love to see them include more DIY.

I wouldn't be sad if DWELL folded. So pretentious.

I have a friend who used to intern with Southern Progress (the parent company) and worked with the Cottage Living, Coastal Living, and Cooking Light teams. She works with another media company now, but she emailed me this morning and told me that about this. She said that everyone she used to work with has been laid off. It's a scary world out there.
I used to be a media planner at an ad agency and we advertised a lot with Cottage Living. In fact, I still have a Cottage Living coffee mug sitting on my desk right now.

That's a shame. Cottage Living has consistently put out issues that extol the virtues of small-space, simple living in a way that no other magazine (or website) manages to do with anywhere near the same level of believability or attainability. I have to wonder if the name of the magazine has been a hindrance -- when I've recommended it to people in the past, they almost always think I'm referring to Country Living (which is another thing entirely!).
I'd be alright with Domino checking out. It has gone way, way downhill, becoming more and more eye-rollingly lame with every issue.

On the brit side, I hope LivingEtc is safe.

I enjoy Cottage Living however, I am not surprised by the news.
Seems like this past year had more special advertising segments and less editorial content. Perhaps in an effort to keep the magazine afloat?
My heart goes out to the employees who have been laid off. Having been there myself, it's never easy, especially at the holidays.

I'll be sad to see Cottage Living go. I still have high hopes for a small cottage in the country, or a small apartment in NYC someday. Sigh....

Perhaps we should start a new magazine...

Lucky, the Condé Nast-owned women's shopping magazine, has let go three mid-level editors. A spokeswoman for the title declined to comment, but I'm told the cuts were necessitated by the recent corporate mandate that all magazines must reduce their staffs and budgets by 5 percent. Whereas some other titles were able to meet that goal by leaving open positions unfilled, Lucky was fully staffed at the time of the edict; thus, layoffs. Condé Nast also owns Portfolio.

Oh darn, I like CL. Wonder how they will make those of us with unfinished subscriptions whole? I already got an extension for Domino when H&G folded ... now it too might fall? (How appropriately titled, in that case.)
(Domino needs to stop putting people in their bare feet on every cover. Enough already ...)

Get rid of Dwell. Enough of their crap. Even my boyfriend who hates magazines, let alone home magazines, liked Cottage Living.
