Transit Authority Figures: Fire Island & Hamptons Subway Maps
At first glance, a poster looks like one of those "improved" designer subway maps that pop up from time to time, but upon closer inspection, one realizes they are completely fabricated.
We've seen their New England locations maps on Apartment Therapy Boston, and now Transit Authority Figures has created posters for two vacation spots in the New York area — Fire Island and Hamptons/North Fork. The lines and stops along the routes are chosen based on their local importance, and on the aesthetic effects of placing a right angle here, a 45 degree angle there...
All posters measure 18" x 24", and will set you back $20. Available directly from Transit Authority Figures.

This is really funny. I love it.
Next thing you know, people are going to have black-and-white "old" subway signs from the Hamptons and Fire Island subway system up as decor in their homes.

Aesthetics, sure, but shouldn't a transit line be a little more about functionality? I admit it's a neat idea, but you see on the island, where the red line curves around to "skip" the purple station? UGH. How do you connect? It's not even like there's a stop up on that curve. Little things like that throw me off.

Funny, when I was a kid in the Berkshires, who really wanted to live fulltime in NYC (mom was from here, and we spent LOTS of time in New York -- I grew up knowing the trains, etc.) -- I drew up a Subway & Peoplemover map for the area.
Oddly enough, the current bus system (the "B") has routes that are virtually the same!
I think these are fun -- totally silly, of course, but a boy can dream, no? And some people turn their dreams into wonderful realities. Kudos.
