Tween Furniture Takes Off

2004_11_9_brooke.jpgBabies booming. We didn't wake up on the wrong side of bed or anything like that, but we did find this Times article, Home Decor, a la Teenager, somewhat surprising. While we thought that the upsurge in baby boomer's spoiling their children rotten had statistically ended, along comes a new boom in the furniture market for children.

More retailers are rushing to take advantage of what has become a $17 billion market for room furnishings meant to appeal directly to young people from third grade through high school. It is a market, said Michael Wood, a vice president at Teenage Research Unlimited, that has "really exploded in the last two years.''

Mind you, what is perhaps really going on here is that children are spending their money on furniture rather than other things, and the interior design bug has trickled down to toddlers. Oi-veh. If only this had happened when we were chldren. (Thanks, Jonathan!) MGR

Wouldn't you expect, though, someone working for a company called "Teenage Research Unlimited" to say that the teen market is a hopping and lucrative segment?! I think he'd look pretty silly otherwise.

I'm a furniture designer, specializing in furniture for teens. I can confirm that this market is definitely growing. The boomers have bought most of the furniture they are going to buy and their tastes are set. Younger consumers are more open to new fashion oriented designs and apparently have the means to purchase them

Extremely comfortable and well made. Customer service was excellent.WIEDER is a surprise - in spite of its minimalist looks it offers excellent comfort, thanks to high quality filling and spring mattresses in the seat. Roomy and comfortable while not taking up too much space. Even more surprising is the ease with which the sofa converts into a double bed.www.wiederusa.com
