I remember some ugly furniture — I was 18 and scheduled to get my wisdom teeth removed. I went to the office of an oral surgeon I'd never been to before and the waiting room was decked out in an over-the-top nautical theme: over a dozen ship models, captain's wheel furniture and nautical chart upholstery fabric.

Hhahha very entertaining!

LOL! I think I've seen that store on Queens Blvd.

I always thought the epitome of a total lack of style was the domain of generic family restaurant franchises.
"We don't have a theme, just a bunch of crazy crap on the walls!"

Sorry, I find this clip horribly irritating. Ironically, I could totally see those brown sofas in an apartment therapy post.

the sad thing is that when you say you like modern furniture, this is often what you get.
funny, and so nasty.

Was this filmed in a store in Vegas? It looks like 90% of the furniture stores in this town *sigh*

radioriot. don't be mad apartment therapy featured your store for the first time, and this is what they have to say about it ;)

I hope people remember this post next time the Pottery Barn, West Elm, and IKEA bashing happens.

That was GREAT!! I was searching the entire time for something redeemable, but surprisingly the video kept getting uglier and uglier. LOL

Oh god, I live in Florida, and I swear this looks like every furniture store down the street from my house! It's horrible!

Patrick the other one, you are so right! *sigh*

A lot of this isn't that bad. Come on... I'm sure the Eames/Hermann Miller chairs that's in every home posted on this blog was once considered tacky or will be tacky again sometime soon (some of it already is ugly and unpractical). Because it wasn't bought at DWR doesn't mean it's godly awful.

i knew it was only a matter of time before someone defended this furniture. it's just plain ugly from every objective measure. there is good affordable furniture out there and this is just not it.
it looks like the furniture that HGTV gives for free to first time homebuyers at the end of every episode of "my first place."
view duckumu's profile
So, duckumu, where does the "good affordable furniture" come from? Enlighten us, please. I'm sure they'd make great additions to the AT Marketplace.
As far as that video, the furniture and the store, what's the point of just making fun of someplace that is someone's livelihood, where people are no doubt buying things? It seems cruel.
When is the Ugly Baby video coming out?
view patrick (the other one)'s profile
What's the point? "jokes," is the point.
THAT PURPLE LAMP IS REALLY FUNNY. THAT WINONA JUDD POSTER IS REALLY FUNNY. WHY IS THAT GUY PLAYING GUITAR? HE CALLS IT A "SPACE LAMP." LOCAL COMMERCIALS ARE PRODUCED POORLY. GET OVER YOUR SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS COMPLAINING AND LET PEOPLE MAKE RELATIVELY INOFFENSIVE JOKES FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

I would totally watch an Ugly Baby video. And and Ugly Etsy video. Have you been these websites? Really funny.

And I understand the making fun of people's lively hood thing, but if they have the freedom to sell it, we have the freedom to make fun of it. God bless America

In the last shot, the store sign says 'Ugly Furniture'...unless someone altered the video and added the sign.
view junklover's profile
It is funny. : )
I think I have seen uglier furniture, but not uglier accessories. I like how the announcer broke down when he saw the cat with a monkey faced mask - or whatever it was.

I almost like that last coffee table at the end if the colors were a little different...
PS- patrick (the other one), who cares if people use caps....whatevah!

patrick: There are already many ugly baby videos.
This video isn't making fun of a particular store. It is making fun of generic furniture warehouse stores, which are all over the place and feature a decent to hideous ratio of 1:10 at best. Even the video is an extended take on the kind of local commercials they run. If you live in a small city or large town you probably have a few. The best part is many of those sectionals cost almost as much as something from a higher end retailer, but they are just targeting people in a weird 80's coke condo time warp.
view kamikazetedibear's profile
Hilarious. Space lamp can visit my earth house any day.... although hopefully it will blast off in a timely fashion.
Also, complaining about how this is making fun of someone's livelihood, well, c'mon. First of all, the true name and location of the store isn't given. And besides, this certainly doesn't stop our little AT community from speaking critically (and sometimes downright making fun) of the work of designers and architects on this site. Is that not their livelihood as well?

Ta, I thought the same thing about the table at the end. But then I grew up shopping almost exclusively at thrift shops and Ross, so I'm used to trying to find things that look OK if you squint in a store full of hideous items, haha.

wow guys. really, the hypersensitivity is ridiculous. it's a joke. and it's funny. get over it.

OMG, hilarious! I worked as a designer for Ethan Allen in Queens for 3 years and I'd get people coming in looking for lacquer furniture (with gold trim! and mirrors!) a couple of times a week. I should have sent them here.
Listen, we all know that everyone should furnish their home in a way that works for their budget and lifestyle. Even if it means "ugly furniture". Taste is subjective (even if it shouldn't be) =>
view queenbee1230's profile
Whenever I see ugly crap like the monkey-faced cat or the teardrop full of frog-eggs , I think to myself...someone ACTUALLY spent a lot of TIME and EFFORT coming up with the concept and then actually making it. Who ARE these people???
view rexrayfan's profile
i found this video funny. don't know why everyone's so uptight about it. different strokes for different folks.
i do recall a particular HOUSE FULL of especially ugly furniture. my aunt & uncles house in the late 90's. formica and lacquer abound, similar lucite sculptures as seen in this video, sofas that with brushtroked upholstery, hideous artwork that looked like someone attached a bunch of scrunchies to a canvas and then spray painted it with jem's "my first car paint" set (not a real thing, btw). there was mauve, salmon, mint green, hunter green and lavender all in the same room...with a white carpet.
finally they've moved on (also south) and their home is tommy bahama casual. finally they've broken the chains of peach lacquered love.
