Excuse us while we go bow to the porcelain gods again. Pardon us, things were a bit spotty today at AT as Regina was out totally and I succumbed to the same awful stomach bug that felled me last week, right after breakfast. Does anyone else have this thing: no fever, just totally nauseous and vomitting until there's nothing left? Seems to recede within 8 hours, but may hang around? Meanwhile, Aaron and Justine, who normally just handles the office, covered all the bases mightily. We hate to miss a day and we'll be back with a new theme next week. Fittingly it's Bathroom Month. It sounds like food poisoning. Did you eat leftovers after the last episode? Could be that there's something in the fridge that needs to be tossed. Another problem could be a contaminated sponge. If you don't do this already, you should pop your wet sponges into the microwave for 1 minute after each use.
Hello~
Hope you're feeling better...I must ask tho' where there porcelin looking figurine in the photo came from? That guy holding up the toilet seat? It's awesome. I want one.
Dude, that's not a stomach bug, that's food poisoning. Drink lots of water. Hope you feel better soon.
I had teh same thing last Monday and actually wound up in the hospital from the dehydration. Then my husband got the same thing and the producer working at his job had the same thing.
Hope you feel better!!
Yes, my husband and I had it last summer. His started a few hours before mine. Luckily I managed to get our 1 year to bed first before mine kicked in. It was crazy miserable. The pharmacist told me that it was a stomach bug going around. I have since had a ton of friends get it.
As someone who has travelled extensively through Asia, I have an encyclopedia knowledge of stomach issues. Lack of fever/stabbing pains/chills etc. indicates this is not a stomach flu, but caused by something you've eaten disagreeing with you.
The recurrence suggests another possible reason. Diapering a new baby can possibly lead to. . .ahem. . .certain things getting onto your hands and then into your system. Judicious handwashing and use of hand sanitizer can help you here.
I know one time I was utterly stymied by my stomach problems since I had been so careful about what I was eating, then realized that washing my hands in bad Chinese tap water combined with an unfortunately nailbiting habit were to blame. After it had run its course, hand sanitizer prevented all future problems!
My entire office is suffering as well! I've been forced to behave anti-socially just in case it's headed my way. Has everyone been eating at the same place?? Or is it a stomach virus?
My doctor at the hospital said it was a stomach virus. I had a low grade fever-- 100 at one point and then, oddly enough, 97.
norovirus.
horrible, horrible...leaves you weak for days. Highly contagious (I didn't know that)...they just closed down a hotel in DC when many guests got violently sick with it.
maxwell,
try kan jang, a swedish formula avail at that health food place on 13th street & 6th ave or online by clicking on my name. seriously, it works miracles and strengthens your immune system
Whoever said norovirus may be right. Apparently there's a natiowide outbreak this winter:

Definitely had that one before - couldn't keep anything but water down for a week, and I learned an important lesson:
Never drink orange juice if there's any chance it might come back again. It will still taste like orange juice, but gross.
Norovirus started circulating in December. Rotavirus started in late February.
I had it a week and a half ago. Violent vomiting and fever went from 96.5 to 101.5. And I still don't feel so great.
thanks all. for some reason it's nice to have company.
I think the virus folks are right in this case, but what do you do for it? Anything? or just watch your diet until it goes away?
I'll look up Roto and Norovirus in the meantime...
Sounds like Norovirus to me - whole family (incl me :-( ) had it on Christmas day. Good news is the violent haluconogenic (sp?) part is short lived... Looking forward to more (less) bathroom design features this month!
OH, just missed Maxwell's post asking for what to do: basically just stay hydrated (even a sip of water every so often is better than nothing). Avoid dairy for several days - no alcohol, caffeine etc. until you really feel better. There is no real cure, you have to just man up and get through it - if you do get dehydrated (or if a baby gets it) see a doctor for help quick. Pull a blanket over your head for a bit and stay near that well designed bathroom and we'll all see you soon! Oh yeah, disinfect! This thing is really contagious. We all got it from party balloons (really). My 5 year old neice (who had been throwing up the night before, a fact none of us took seriously as this seems to happen to kids all too often) blew them up with her virus laden spit and they slowly leaked germs (kids just can't tie ballooons!) onto the dance floor during a family party - about 36 hours later we were all on the floor, no dancing involved. Feel better!
Yes virus!
Had the very same thing last weekend. Not pretty. All the doctor did was send me to get immodium AD(really thankful for once that the tub is close to toilet...eww.) and to only eat starches and clear liquids until it went away. If things didn't get better in 24 hours to go to the ER to get iv fluids.
boil some lemon juice (half a lemon, squeeze and drop it in), dried mint (lot's and lot's) and some water for about five minutes.
then filter the mint, lemon and drink the liquid slowly. it works for me everytime. hope it helps.
feel better :)
I had that once, sitting on the bowl n vomitting into a waste basket between my legs. Pardon the descriptive, but it was coming out both ends until I realized I was dangerously dehydrated and muttered a demand to be taken to the emergency room. Diagnosis: kidney infection. I was surprised, but the ER docs said it can often be mistaken for food poisoning or stomach virus. So, um, maybe see a doctor and get checked out.
Gastroenteritis is the medical term used for these vomiting/diarrheal illnesses. If you're interested in learning more about gastroenteritis in children, click on my name for a link to an article from the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, which is a journal from the Center for Disease Control. Much of this is applicable to adults, as well.
My toilet tank has a tendency to "sweat" and now the cat thinks this is a great new water source (ick!). Any thoughts other than "call a plaumber you bad kitty's mama"?
Yes, my husband and I just lost two weeks of our lives with this bug. I am only today able to say I turned a corner towards wellness. I didn't have the vomiting, but he did so much so that we took him to the ER just to get fluids in him.
Two years ago, I had food poisoning. And I knew it was becoming an emergency when I had drank 4 small bottles of gnger ale and didn't pee for 8 hours. And the pounding headache. If either of these happen, get to the ER A.S.A.P.
It's norovirus. We've had it twice (in different forms) in the past 2 weeks; first wave from the daycare (which felled our 3 year old for 12 hours), and then a wave from work last week. Today my best friend and her 3 year old have it; I am hard pressed to find anyone around who HASN'T caught it! There is nothing much to be done; just ride the wave (at least it is mercifully short!), and stay hydrated (a tablespoon of water every 5 minutes or so).
Have you guys seen this? It's definitely striking big.

Blue Flu Bug Spreads Through NYPD Academy
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The flu has swept through the New York City Police Academy, leaving as many as 60 recruits ailing in recent weeks.
Officials say there has been a recent spike in the number of recruits calling in sick.
The city Health Department acknowledges it is working with the police department to deal with the situation.
Health Department spokesman Andrew Tucker says recruits have complained of gastrointestinal and viral symptoms.
They have been told to stay home and get plenty of rest.
My Boyfriend had this last weekend. I am knocking on all kinds of wood that it does not hit me. It was "unpleasent" to say the least. He stayed in bed and pulled the room in after him. One helpful note, if you must, must, must, drink something red gatorade is apparently okay on the way out as well. Gross I know.
yeah it does sound like norovirus. norovirus only takes like 10 nanoparticles (or something fancy medical sounding) to infect. it's mainly transmitted through feces and vomit and can stay in an infected individual's, uh, poo, for up to two weeks. washing your hands before you eat is the best way to prevent it (purell is ineffective). it is possible to get reinfected. maybe someone cooked you something and hadn't washed their hands first. disgusting, but one of the most common ways it's spread.
hope you're feeling better!
Had it last year and threw up into the Grand Canyon, literaly. After a day and a half of misery, I "borrowed" food from the baby - crackers and applesauce. Hope you feel better soon.
